Hey everybody!

I woke up to this mail the other day.

Device: /dev/ada0, ATA error count increased from 675 to 677

First I thought it was a bad SATA cable. I have experienced that before, since the initial value was 675. From the S.M.A.R.T. test report, I noticed that, da0, da1, da2 and da4 also had encountered a UDMA CRC error. I haven't recived any mails about that, nor does the FreeNAS GUI inform me about it.
(I know that ada0 has 81 reallocted sector counts. I'm not 100% sure about it, but I think that was also because of the bad SATA cable, cause the value hasn't gone up since I changed the cable, which is nearly a year ago)

I performed an extended S.M.A.R.T. test yesterday on the 5 HDD's. Here are the smartctl -a /dev/X output for each HDD.

The UDMA CRC error is only shown in the overview on da0, da1, da2 and da4, not as an error like on ada0. Could that be the reason why I haven't recived any mails about it, plus that the FreeNAS GUI isn't informing be about it?

There was an ongoing scrub on the zpool, while these error were encountered.

I have checked the cabling. The 5 HDD's are not connected to the same SATA connector. No loose cables or anything.

I'm gonna buy a new WD Red 3TB next month to replace ada0. I'm also gonna buy a UPS, but until then, how should i proceed?

Thanks in advance!

Ada0 is failing, you should replace it asap ;)

The UDMA CRC error is only shown in the overview on da0, da1, da2 and da4, not as an error like on ada0.

I don't check UDMA errors (but you can add the check in the script if you want it) because you can have some UDMA errors in the life of the drive (especially if one time the SATA cable wasn't connected correctly) without them causing any problems. I guess I can add a check but with a very high value by default (something like 500 or 1000 for example).

The ada0 is reported critical because it has more than 10 (or whatever the treshold value you've chosen) reallocated sectors.

Okay. I will order a WD Red 3TB soon then.

What I meant with the overview. If you look at the output for smartctl -a /dev/X. Then the UDMA CRC error isn't shown for any other drives than ada0. Like this.

Code:
Error 677 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 23057 hours (960 days + 17 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle.
After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
  -- -- -- -- -- -- --
  84 51 00 10 30 18 03 Error: ICRC, ABRT at LBA = 0x03183010 = 51916816
Commands leading to the command that caused the error were:
CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Powered_Up_Time Command/Feature_Name
  -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ---------------- --------------------

You have made the status report script. Thanks for that. I like it a lot!

For Ada0 the values ID 5 and 196 are your key indicators of a hardware failure for this drive. As suggested, replace it at once.

Also, UDMA errors are data transfer errors, typically associated with a data cable but if you have swapped the data cable and the problem persists, it could be a drive electronics problem. Small counts are not to be worried about but if they continue to occur then troubleshooting should commence to isolate the failed item. In your case you have one obvious failed drive.

Oh, I believed that you talked about the exclamation mark in the output of the script.

Maybe there's a treshold where they don't show the details of the error.

You're welcome ;)

Ohh, the Reallocation Event Count. I haven't been paying attention to that value. Think I will order a new drive today!

Thanks for the answers, joeschmuck and Bidule0hm.

I created this guide to assist in troubleshooting hard drive failures. If you haven't looked at it, please do so as it should explain a lot and what specifically to look for to identify a hardware failure or data error. It will not cover every situation but does cover what problems we typically see. If there are any suggestions to make this guide more usable, please let me know.
