Hello guys,

First of all, I want to say that I'm not experienced with FreeNas and I've searched many forums and guides on how to do this but unfortunately, I'm unsure which way I should go about this therefore, I'm asking for help here.

I know having a RAID controller it's a bad idea but I'm in a stage where I can't do any changes. Basically, what happened is that I had a 9260-8i in a system with 2 Raid 5 configs and Freenas running from the USB key. This card was flaking out so I've replaced with a 9271-8i and everything was imported automatically. The system was booting perfectly fine with the 9260-8i, someone else done the config and I assume the drivers are all loaded for that card.

Now, the problem is that this card - being a different chip - would need a different driver in order for the system to be able to boot. I have the drivers and I'm looking at the documentation from LSI on how to integrate them but I'm unsure if I have to do everything listed in the steps, rebuild the kernel, etc.

Would it be possible to unpack the .tgz file and simply replace the driver on the USB key with the one for the 9271-8i?

I don't have the slightest clue on how to proceed so please, your thoughts are more than welcomed.

The spec is:
x8dtl-if mb
A xeon CPU, can't remember from the top of my head
32gb of ram
9271-8i with cachevault
18x3tb drives
Freenas version is 8.X can't recall exactly.

Hardware RAID and ZFS is a bad idea. It's not possible to integrate a new driver into FreeNAS without manually building your own release.
