Well, some stuff dropped into my lap (off a shelf at umart) today..

120Gb Kinsgton V400 SSD - $49 so cheap enough.
Intel i3-6100
WD RED NAS 3Tb drive

I still need help on (as per my post above)

So if someone could steer me to the cheapest place to buy:

Being in Australia, I guess makes it a bit difficult. Only thing I could come up with is this eBay listing, but not sure how it compares price-wise to other sites.

That price looks 'about right' I suppose.
Any link to the appropriate RAM ? I want to make sure I don't get fake/incompatible RAM.

EDIT: I just checked out the price of ECC RAM on that site - holy mother of dog ! That's just stupid. The RAM would cost more than the mobo !

Per SuperMicro, they list the "Module Manufacturer Part #" for the "MEM-DR416L-SL01-EU21" as "M391A2K43BB1-CPB"; so I did a quick eBay search for that and saw this for ~$85.00/Each; which would also ship to you.

May want to check according to "Module Manufacturer Part #" instead of "SMC Module Part #"; but I am not a SuperMicro user, so take my info with a grain of salt....

I do agree that is pretty expensive, but I run old stuff so my perspective may bit a bit skewed.

As regards the OP. Would 16gb memory be sufficient? It's a considerable expense so I don't want to buy more than is needed.

Not to put too fine a point on it, the usual process is to call up the motherboard stats for each one in two windows next to each other and compare them.

So if we do that we kinda notice that one of them robs some PCIe to provide NVMExpress external ports, which downsizes the PCIe slots/lanes (and makes one of them an x1). So if you're not doing NVMe, you probably want the X11SSL-F.

According to the manual, the -CF model supports SAS 3.0 while the -nF model supports NVMe. There may be more differences as well - refer to the supermicro website for details.

Purpose: Media storage and Server, Plex streaming.

Should be, and if not, you can upgrade later.

NVMe is connecting storage (generally flash) directly to PCIe, without something like an SAS or SATA controller and the related serialization and additional complexity.

Stupid question perhaps, maybe, probably.

I was hoping that there was an 1151 socket mini-ITX supermicro mobo that I could use instead of the X11SSL-F (microATX)
It would just simplify my build is all.

The only one I can find (happy to be told if I'm wrong) that supports an i3 6th gen CPU is https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Core/Q170/X11SSV-Q.cfm
unfortunately it appears to have only 5 SATA ports, given one would be used for boot SSD allows only 4 HDD's - and given I have4 x 3TB HDD's - assuming Raid 2 gives me 6 TB of storage. Adequate for now but......

Thoughts? Or should I just get a bigger hammer and make the micro ATX board 'fit' LOL

Why does it have to be 6th gen 1151 socket - because I already bought the CPU.
It is unopened however, so feel free to suggest other strategies....

I looked into it. Couldn't find any high Sata count skylake minitx which supported 64GB.

You could use dual USb 16Gb flash sticks and thus get the six ports.

I wanted to build something like the FreeNAS MiniXL but with a skylake

I bit the bullet and have just ordered an X11SSL-F along with 32Gb of appropriate Samsung ECC RAM.

Yes, and no. :)

I got hold of a Phantek miniXL case (which is a laugh as its quite big) which fits a microATX board and miniITX board for a second system.

The problem? The micro ATX section is spoken for, as it will have my office/gaming system on it, as it needs clearance for GPU etc.
This leaves the space allocated for a miniITX board, into which I have to fit a MicroATX board (which is, of course, larger).

The solution: A hammer. ;)

Or more seriously a bit of case modding..... I have a thread on another forum about the case, but not sure what the policy here is regarding linking to threads on other forums....
