I have one i3 system I'm using to test 9.3 betas & have experienced a problem twice on OS updates I'd like advice on. The problem has been that the system does not come back up on reboot, even after waiting 1 hour. If I locally power cycle the box, it will come up the 2nd time. I'm not seeing anything in the log after the successful restarts. The system is headless so I can't say what is on screen during the unsuccessful boot attempts.

Any advice on what I can do to get more info to post?

Thanks,
John

You need to add some additional information such as which version are you trying to update from and to. There was a break in the upgrade software. Look for the thread under the 9.3 Testing area and see if it applies. If you are having a new problem, report it in the bug reports.

Thanks for the feedback. Not certain I think it is a bug that can be addressed with what I can report. In the most recent example, I used the GUI update process to upgrade from FreeNAS-9.3-BETA-1416634263-1 to FreeNAS-9.3-BETA-1416852093. The update process seemed to proceed normally and the system rebooted. However, on the reboot, the system failed in the boot process (I let it try for an hour & ping, ssh, & the GUI were not available). At this point, I manually power-cycled the system. On restart, everything is normal. This is what happened the 1 prior time I've seen this on the 9.3 betas. Since on power cycle, everything seems normal & I cannot repeat the problem, combined with the fact that there is no monitor on the system, unless there is a boot log that survives the freeze, I'm not certain I can provide enough info to follow up, espcially if no other testers have seen sonething similar. I would not want to waste develpopers' time for a nonreproduceable problem cured by a reboot. If it happens again, I think I'll replace the flash drive and use a different USB port - either could have an intermittent hardware glitch even though a scrub reveals no issues.

I too am seeing a similar thing. Every time that I've updated, the system doesn't come back up, and sits on the grub loader, waiting for a key press.
Today's update also failed to boot, with an error message something like 'no kernel loaded'. The only way to fix this seemed to be a power cycle.
