Hi All,

I am looking for your input to ensure my chosen part will work together.

I am looking to build a Mini-ITX TrueNAS Scale server, which allows me to an extra copy of important data and photo at home and constantly sync to Google Drive. The reason for choosing Mini-ITX instead of bigger option is because I am an expat and it is very likely for me to re-locate somewhere else in the future. So having a system that's reasonable portable is somewhat important to me.

I have read through the TrueNAS Community Hardware Guide 2021-01 Edition Revision 2a, the TrueNAS Scale documentation, and a handful of threads on Mini-ITX build before compiling the part list below. However, I am not 100% confident with the parts I have chosen and would like to run this past this expert here.

PC Part Picker link: here

Budget: Roughly 1000 USD
CPU: Intel Core i3-9300 Desktop Processor 4 Cores up to 4.3 GHz LGA1151 (Xeon seems to be way out of budget for me)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i, Premium Low-Profile CPU Cooler for Intel LGA1200 & LGA115x
Motherboard: Supermicro MBD-X11SCL-IF-O
Memory: 2 x Samsung 16GB DDR4-2400 ECC M391A2K43BB1-CRC
Hard Disk: 4 x Seagate Exos 7E8 4TB Enterprise HDD 3.5 Inch 512n SATA 6Gb/s, 7200RPM, 256MB Cache (ST4000NM000A) (Target set up will be creating 1 pool, with data vdev of RAIDZ2, this should give me just a bit less 8TB. I currently has 700GB data in Google Drive so I think 8TB should last 3 years before I buy a set of bigger hard disks and perform the install/resilver task).
Graphic Card: MSI GeForce GT 710 (Give me the ability to run Plex or Jellyfin)
Case: JONSBO N2
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 550 GM, 80 Plus Gold 550W, 123-GM-0550-Y1

Your help are much appreciated. Thanks.

interesting that you chose a motherboard that only has 4 sata ports given that the Jonsbo N2 has 5 slots for HDDs. I'm doing a similar build and am only looking at mobos with at least 5.

I think the choices you've made look good, but you'd probably want the opinion of someone with more experience.

This is what I am thinking about doing. In case you wanted to compare. No ECC, I was thinking of building a back up / media server for this one - so ECC was optional for me.

Item NamePrice Notes Link
Case Fractal Design Node 304110- ATX PSUs, up to 160mm in length (To fit in combination with a long graphics card, PSUs with modular connectors on the back typically need to be shorter than 160mm)
- Graphics cards, up to 310mm in length, when two HDD brackets are removed (Graphics cards longer than 170mm will conflict with PSUs longer than 160mm)
- Tower CPU coolers, up to 165mm tall
- Six supports for either 3.5in. or 2.5in. HDDs/SSDs
