Long delay in start of copy of a file to SMB share. (MAC only, I think)

I have two newly rebuilt Truenas boxes running 13_U5.

When copying a file from a Mac to an SMB share, occasionally there is a long pause before it begins. Somtimes it's 10 seconds, but I've let it wait before for over a minute and then it started. The size of the files doesn't seem to matter and it appears to only be the first file. After that it copies quickly until I let it sit for some unknown time period.

I have checked all the logs and I can see the authentication happen quickly, I can see the port open, but it just waits with nothing logged that I can see.

It is consistent on at least two Macs and on both TrueNas devices which makes me think it's config setting or something.

I've looked and don't see this an issue discussed before. Any thougts? Happy to supply logs and snapshots, just not sure which ones to send.

I've had TrueNas and these same Macs all working harmoniously for years so I am skeptical it is something in the new config.

It may be worth grabbing an SMB traffic capture with Wireshark or similar to confirm that the delay is on the TrueNAS end, and to look for any other odd behavior that could be causing the delay.

You mentioned two servers - any chance you're using some form of load balancing between them? A misconfig in something like that could explain the long delay initially but fast transfer once it's started.

Closing the loop here. I ran wireshark for days and found it wasn't realated to just SMB, it was everything, Rsync, etc. Most of those run in the background so I never noticed the delay. I never noticed it via the GUI but I am sure it was there in the background but I still find it odd it was most noticable via SMB and specifically MACs.

Wireshark showed lots of SYN's without ACK's and even though error's weren't logging on the server they were seen in the trace. Swapped the cable first with no change. Installed a new PCI based NIC. (was using the onboard) and the problem went away. Also noticed a hugh increase in speed. I will investigate further when I have the time but for now the issue seems to be a faulty onboard NIC.

Thanks.
