Right now I run Ubuntu desktop gui on my server, and FreeNAS inside a virtualbox on Ubuntu.

But I would like to run only FreeNAS on my server, and then, if it is possible to run Ubuntu inside a jail - can it be done ?

HPE Proliant Microserver Gen8 Entry - 12GB ram - CPU 2.3Ghz Dual core - Harddisk 1TB + 2TB - FreeNAS 9.10

No, it isn't possible--not exactly, anyway. But you can, for right now, run a VirtualBox jail on FreeNAS, and Ubuntu inside that, though the devs are going to be removing the VirtualBox capability probably sooner rather than later. Or you can mess around with bhyve/iohyve, which is almost certainly a better hypervisor, and run Ubuntu that way.
