Indexing SMB share for Mac clients

Hi there,

I would like to ask if it's possible to serve indexed SMB shares for Mac workstations. It seems like someone on this forum post had some success in configuring FreeBSD to do so, but how would I go about doing this on FreeNAS?

Our setup is a FreeNAS box linked to Active Directory on a Windows Server serving SMB shares to Mac OS Mojave (mostly) clients. Whenever we mount the shares the Macs take a while to get the metadata and file browsing is generally a little slow. I would love to have Spotlight working nicely on the shares too.

Would appreciate any input, thank you!

Spotlight indexing isn't going to work in FreeBSD right now. You might be able to do it at small scale with gnome-tracker and vanilla FreeBSD, but it won't scale up to what we have in enterprise environments. I've created optimizations for directory listing performance for Macs in 11.3 (soon to enter Beta).

Okay, thank you for the information (and all your work on FreeNAS!). Would be keen to Beta test 11.3 - how does one do that?
