Hi! I'm a total FreeNAS noob, and I need help please.

Is there any way to cut/paste or send you this start-up info?
That would depend on the terminal program you are using.

If you are using something like PuTTY, you can just highlight and right click or click the PuTTY icon on the top left corner of the window and select "Copy all to clipboard"

It would appear to be something that ACPI is trying to allocate and failing, possibly space claimed by option ROM's or something like that. I am not convinced that this is related to your troubles.

Is ACPI enabled or disabled in the BIOS (see the "Power" tab)?

Did you previously have "SATA" or "RAID" selected for the OnChip SATA mode, before changing it to AHCI?

In the BIOS -
ACPI 2.0 Support: is enabled
ACPI APIC support: is enabled

My options for the OnChip SATA Channel are:
IDE
RAID
AHCI

It was set to IDE - I only changed it to AHCI as per your instruction.

Is FreeNAS a 'Plug and Play OS' - it is currently set to NO, is that correct?
Will that prevent the BIOS releasing control of something to FreeNAS?

AHCI should be the correct choice. RAID won't work and I'm guessing IDE is some sort of compatibility mode. The manual for the board suggests that there ought to be a "SATA" option but who knows how old that manual text is.

You can try twiddling the PnP OS either way. It ought to work both ways, in theory...

I tried setting the PnP OS to YES but it doesn't seem to make any obvious difference (so what does it do?).

I noticed that in the BIOS there is an ACPI SRAT Table setting - it is set to enabled. Is this correct?
Also there is -
Secure Virtual Machine: enabled
C1E support: disabled
CPU prefetching: enabled
IO prefetching: enabled
Any of these set incorrectly do you think?

Going back a little, you mentioned using a terminal program like PuTTY - what is it? What is it for?
I'm reading the server information directly from a monitor sat on top of it, and navigating by keyboard.
These will be disconnected once it is up and running, but until then I'll need them...

When FreeNAS is up I can log on via firefox, but can't set anything up because there are no HDDs.

I just tried setting C1E support to enabled - it doesn't seem to make any difference either!
So far, nothing I have done has allowed FreeNAS to 'see' the two brand new 3TB HDDs I bought for this server.
The annoying thing is the MOBO 'sees' them fine, so why doesn't FreeNAS?
Drat, and double drat!

Reset bios to default.. Then select AHCI.. Ensure ACPI APIC support: is disabled.... If you still get fatal errors how did you create the USB? Did you check if the image was valid after you downloaded? ACPI SRAT Table setting - Do you get any options for this or is it just enable/disable? I would disable everything except AHCI and see if it boots.. Including sound and any other ports you wont use..Secure Virtual Machine: disable this.. Keep everything else standard and retry.. You verified no bios upgrades available?..

Also please post results from /var/log/messages if it boots..

Some of us have been wondering that for 15 years. No but seriously, PnP is supposed to imply certain things and cause configuration to be handled and handed off a certain way. FreeBSD usually handles things correctly either way.

I noticed that in the BIOS there is an ACPI SRAT Table setting - it is set to enabled. Is this correct?

Don't expect it to make a difference.

Also there is -
Secure Virtual Machine: enabled
C1E support: disabled

Also don't expect them to make a difference. Feel free to experiment though

PuTTY is a Windows SSH client. One of the many nice things about ssh is that you could log in to your FreeNAS server and capture actual output of commands with cut and paste. For example, you could ssh in, type "dmesg", and paste the entire thing here inside a CODE block.

On FreeNAS, enable ssh, set a root password, and select the "enable login as root" and "use password auth".

Inside PuTTY:

Window->Appearance->Lines of scrollback - add a zero to make it 2000 (200 is useless).

Then log in to the server. You can then do a command like "dmesg" which you then cut and paste like this

Code:
# dmesg

Hi - thanks for helping to solve this puzzle!!!

I just want to make sure of something before I do it - Reset BIOS to defaults - is that the same thing as 'Load Setup Defaults' in the BIOS's Exit screen?
I'm a bit unsure of these things, as I'm not very computer savvy, so I thought it best to check with you first...

There's probably two options, knowing ASUS, one will be "Setup Defaults" and one will be "Optimal Defaults" or something like that. "Optimal" usually contains the edgier settings defaulted to the "faster" but "riskier" while "Setup Defaults" will be fairly conservative. So go with "Setup Defaults".

Yes it's the same.. I always work from default settings.. Especially if you haven't done so since ditiching gaming setup etc.. My money is on the SRAT table.. I'd disable all the ACPI related including the SRAT table.. and see if it'll boot smoothly.. Then turn bios settings back on 1 by 1.. My money is on the SRAT table causing problems or something to that effect.. I have "similiar" ACPI options on my old old server.. It was wonky until set correctly..

If you can post some error messages that would be great.. Bad USBs/installs can cause wonkiness aswell.. Is the ram matching sticks?

Just changing back to default settings may make it alot better.. Id have SRAT disabled as first test and / or acpi and srat disabled..

Right - that's got me confused for a start... LOL
I don't even know what an SSH client is (I'm not an IT bod). I'm just trying to improve our home network, so anyone we allow can access files at any time (but still be secure), and also re-breathe new life into an older but (previously) perfectly functional PC at the same time. I can't afford a 'proper' server but I think this server should do me very well if I can get it to work.

Do Asus MOBOs usually work OK with FreeNAS? Is there any history of them not working OK?

@ Yatti
I have set the BIOS back to Setup Defaults but have not yet gone through all the settings individually.
I never used my old PC for gaming, it was primarily used for CAD work (hence the 8GB of Kingston RAM - 4x 2GB - and they are all identical model sticks).
I'll work through the BIOS settings and get back to you as soon as I have... fingers crossed...

We were an Asus shop through much of the '90's. Kinda moved on during the 2000's because they didn't do much for Opteron server-y things. Now we mostly do Supermicro or HP.

Generally speaking, I'd be more comfortable with an Asus board because the hardware quality is likely to be better than your average consumer-grade board, but based on observations, Asus is about average for odd BIOS settings and problems resulting from that.

I had issues with my Asus P5KC... Your hard drives can't be in port 5/6 if you have them.. You can find more info on Putty here.. Let me know what happens after you disable those BIOS options and attempt restart? Is it constantly giving fatal errors?

OK lads - I've disabled all things APIC, the SRAT Table, and a couple of more minor things like the azalea sound etc.
On reboot it stopped at exactly the same place it did earlier in the day - at this message:
acpi_install_wakeup_handler+0x13b: movq %r15,0x70(xr12)
db>

I'm going to shutdown, power down, and do a complete restart - back soon...

Okay, try this if it still happens.

At the loader, when it is just beginning to boot, escape to the loader prompt.

Type "set hint.acpi.0.disabled=1" and then "boot"

Tell us what happens. This tells FreeBSD to pretend ACPI isn't supported.

Try a clean freenas installation with default bios settings with SATA>AHCI enabled.. See if that helps.. If not you may need to search for another motherboard..

Try what jgreco poste first..
