SATA peak transfer rate - 6Gb/s

but I can't find the mobo's SATA transfer speed listed anywhere. It just says Intel RST SATA RAID and that it supports RAID 0,1,5,10 and 6 drives.

Not that it's a huge concern - mechanical drives don't usually even saturate SATA 1.0 unless they're reading from their onboard cache. It's good to have them be able to transfer fast from the cache, but really, even SATA 2.0 (3 Gbps) wouldn't be the end of the world.

Great stuff. Thanks all. I may definitely go the HPE route instead of the Supermicro as it will definitely save me some time and money.

If I had the time, I'd love to build a Supermicro system like you've described. I'm playing with the Plex DVR beta (already had a SiliconDust HDHomeRun) and need something with more horsepower for transcoding.

This morning I ordered a HPE ProLiant ML10 Gen 9 for $200+tax+shipping

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5038747&CatId=329

It lacks some features, like an iLO and needs a special dongle for video (has display ports)

And, once the warranty expires, you can't download drivers, etc. from HP.

But, the price was very appealing.

SUPERMICRO X11SSM-F-B Supermicro X11SSM-F-B LGA1151 Intel C236 DDR4 SATA3 and USB3.0 V and 2GbE MicroATX Motherboard

Intel Core i3-6100 3M 3.7 GHz LGA 1151 BX80662I36100 Desktop Processor

The part about not being able to download drivers after the warranty expires is the only thing that really frightens me.

Considering that really only matters for Windows platforms - pretty sure HP doesn't supply anything for FreeBSD/FreeNAS anyway - I wouldn't be too concerned. BIOS updates might be a slight concern, but as long as you give it a reasonable burnin first, and everything looks solid, I wouldn't go losing any hours of perfectly good sleep over that.

You can buy a "care pack" to extend the warranty. I'm not going to fret about it.

It might be better in terms of hardware but my number 1 factor was cost. For my needs, the $199 ML10 Gen 9 will work.

If I buy a NEW truck should I get a 2016 or a 2017. One might consider a 2016 for pricing reasons or perhaps the manufacturer dropped the V6 option for the 2017 model year. OTOH, I keep my vehicles for a long time, so I would probably get the newer one.

The ML 10 v2 was released in 2015 and supports a maximum of 32GB RAM. The Gen 9 was released in 2016 and supports up to 64GB.

For $200 on Tigerdirect one gets a 3.7GHz I-3 CPU. On Newegg the same Gen 9 with a 3.3GHz? Pentium CPU costs $275.

Yes, I need a VGA dongle, whereas the other fellow doesn't.
