Hi,

I have access to lot of movies, tv-shows, music, etc. The only bottleneck right now is storage. I do have 15 odd 2TB Seagate Portable HDD (SMR type), which I am using right now for storing the content but I don't think it's a neat solution. So, I have been wondering about getting a proper storage solution. The one, where I don't have to worry about running out of space, while not compromising the reliability. I plan to use >10TB drives if somehow this gets assembled. The old 2TB drives will be backed up.

This led me to search for, what would probably me my first ever NAS. The first thing I have to decide is the case. I want it to be economical, but at the same time, I want it to have reliable components besides having lots of bays (24 at least). I kept on coming across threads suggesting that used Supermicro 846 is a preferred alternative compared to Norco 4224, but I am a bit skeptical of the performance of a used or a refurbished components, as they could be lacking important bits/parts/etc.

Given that I am not located in the states, I would probably be importing these to my country via parcel forwarding services, which is why the case shouldn't cost more than 500USD.

So, here I am guys, asking for your suggestions, as i am not much experienced:

You do not want a -TQ backplane in a 4U chassis; the cabling would be a rats' nest. At a minimum, you want a -A, and ideally an -E16 or better. But as to performance, what's to perform in the chassis? It's a metal box.
