Hello all,

I literally just setup my first FreeNAS box with a cobbled together machine (lacking in the RAM department atm :( ). It was surprisingly easy to get a CIFS share up and running, i'm looking forward to learning how to make it faster!
Looks like there is tons of documentation to read through :).

Welcome to the forums!

If you have less than 8GB RAM, ensure you have good backups. Users with insufficient RAM have run into all sorts of problems, including data loss.

You should have backups regardless.

Welcome. FreeNAS is in my opinion the best free NAS software solution out there and by far the cheapest way to own a super fast NAS. We completely understand why someone would cobble a system together, after all it's good to take it for a test drive. However as @gpsguy said, keep backups of your data but I just wouldn't put anything on it that you considered important, not until you build a proper system. But for now, give it a spin.

Thanks for the pointers :) (hopefully it'll keep my pointers....pointing!) I'll be sure not to store anything too important on it for the time being, this system is a bit of a test rig i suppose. It's running on 4GB at the mo, which is less than ideal, but it will soon have 8GB of old-school PC2-6400 from a soon-to-be upgraded desktop.

Keep in mind that we prefer to use ECC RAM, especially when using the ZFS format but this fact is well documented.
