Okay, it is early and my coffee has not kicked in...

I cannot seem to locate an option to donate or contribute on a monthly basis (subscription).

Looked under the Contribute page (http://www.freenas.org/our-community/#contribute) and did a search in the forums for "donate".

So, is there a way I can donate (monthly) to this community?

I don't know what's up with the links on the website lately....

However, that link used to send you to https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/donate as FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD and iXsystems is a proud supporter of the FreeBSD Foundation.
I'm sure donations from individuals to the freebsd foundation are much appreciated.

As far as contributing to freenas, a few things that stand out for non-programmers are:

Spreading the word about freenas
Buying freenas certified hardware from ixsystems
Encouraging the purchase of truenas systems at businesses.

As far as contributing to the forums. Write, answer questions, but avoid becoming a moderator.

Thanks! So I wasn't crazy after all. :)

Good advice, will be happy to answer questions once I learn enough... Might be a loooooong time though, so for now money will have to suffice. ;)

To expand on this just a bit...
When asking a question, provide as much detail as possible to include system hardware and software being run.
When answering a question, don't guess or if you are taking a stab in the dark, ensure it's very clear that you are not positive of the answer. I do this frequently if In' not certain. And you may need to ask thought provoking questions of the person with a problem just so you can formulate a proper answer.

Becoming a moderator is a privilege, we have several here and although I use to practically live on this forum for about 2 years or more, I have tapered off and show up periodically vice every day and then I'm only here a few hours tops because I have other things in my life to do (I'm old don't you know). Moderating the forums is easy because we have many moderators who take care of the forums so it's not all piled on to only a few people. Hey, FreeNAS forums is not my day job, nor my night job, it's a hobby for me and I'm under no obligation as a moderator other than to not abuse the power entrusted to me.

I meant, in the Northern Virginia (NoVA) area. I'm out there every now and then working on our datacenter stuff.

Yeah, Ashburn, we're one of the early residents out at Equinix, back when they were only Building C. Now they've taken over the whole of Filigree, some of Chilum, and starting on Beaumeade, with more on the way. DuPont Fabros Technology has also expanded their massive facility off of Waxpool, and now space has grown so tight that Digital Realty Trust has picked some space on the other side of UUNet to start making more.

It always sort of terrified me to see the big jumbos taking off directly overhead as I was leaving DC3.
