I found an error log under /usr/pbi/crashplan-amd64/share/crashplan. It appears the JVM is crashing.

Same here, no error in log but also no active port:

Has anyone had any luck with this so far? Or is it broke for everyone?

Not working either! Plugin is on but no luck with seeing the port being listened to. The following snippet is from he log files

Has anyone noticed that the java isn't running as well? I briefly got it running and noticed that when the port was listening, it was running via java. It has since stopped running as well as the port. Unfortunately I don't know enough about how to get the java component of Crashplan firing...

I've gotten the plug-in working fine on my new 9.1.1 x64 build. The plug-in jail started fine but, I could not get the linux.so module to load on start-up, I ended up having to manually add it to the /etc/rc.conf to get it to work properly, otherwise I was able to restart and have the service come up with no trouble. I could not get the service to come-up properly if I started if I manually loaded the linux module and then tried to start the service.

Hello all:

I have the CrashPlan plugin working..sorta. Googling for "unmatched nmethod lock/unlock" showed many hits about this being a problem with Java, in general, not CrashPlan specific. I did not find a good explanation, but people did recommend setting the affinity for the failing process as a workaround.

Run this from the jail:
cpuset -l 0 /usr/local/share/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine start

And then this to see if the engine is running:
/usr/local/share/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine status

For me, this approach certainly fixed the lock/unlock errors in /var/log/crashplan/engine_output.log.

Question: Does anyone know how to modify the jail to start CrashPlan in this manner? Right now I am manually jexec'ing if I reboot the box.

Anyone able to write up a verified step-by-step for how they got this working properly (without workarounds)? I'm suprised more people aren't having issues with this or maybe the plugin just isn't being used.

I'd be surprised if a large number of people are using it since FreeNAS is somewhat tailored for large servers, which you'd never try to do an "online backup" with due to the slow upload speed(and the monthly data cap most people have).

I wanted to, and tried it, and had no luck. Haven't been able to try it again since then.

I replaced a linux fileserver with FreeNAS at my side job, and it's been awesome, and was really interested in the Crashplan plugin since that's what we use for backups, and was hoping to not have to run it on a separate server.

Crashplan is actually a good backup service without using the cloud features. We are backing up from desktops to a server running as a crashplan target. That's what I was hoping to replace with the FreeNAS plugin. Maybe I should just look at Bacula, or something that does run natively.

I was able to get the Crashplan plugin, in it's current form, working with a combination of steps....

1. Installed Crashplan plugin/jail using the crashplan plug install via the UI.

2. Opened the jail (crashplan_1) and unchecked VIMAGE and checked NAT. Jail > crashplan_1 > edit jail > uncheck VIMAGE and check NAT. (even after I got the JVM going, I still couldn't see the listening IP and port on my network until I disabled VIMAGE and enabled NAT)

3. Started the plugin via the UI. Plugins > Crashplan > Service Status > ON.

3a. Make sure to accept the CrashPlan terms by clicking on Plugins (on the left hand side) > then click Crashplan > an agreement pop-up should appear.

Screen%2520Shot%25202013-11-20%2520at%252011.39.03%2520AM.png

4. From a terminal prompt (or whatever you use to SSH), SSH into FreeNAS, login as root, and then access your crashplan_1 jail.

Screen%2520Shot%25202013-10-28%2520at%25209.59.24%2520AM.png

5. Assuming you've edited your jail (see 2) and enabled the plugin (see 3), and you've logged into your jail (see 4) check to see if the CrashPlanEngine port is showing/listening, chances are it's not due to the JVM crashing on launch (why I have no idea). Check the CrashPlanEngine listening port using the "sockstat -4" and look for your jails IP and port "xx.xx.xx.xx:4243"

Example of what the sockstat -4 will look like when the Crashplan engine is not running....
Screen%2520Shot%25202013-10-28%2520at%25209.59.42%2520AM.png

6. If you don't see the jails IP and port, run the following command (thank you topprospect):
cpuset -l 0 /usr/local/share/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine start

Note: (cpuset -l 0 (The 0 is a zero, not a o... the font markup doesn't clearly define that) Thanks to the folks who pointed that out.

Screen%2520Shot%25202013-10-28%2520at%25209.59.53%2520AM.png

7. After successfully starting the CrashPlanEngine, you should see the jail IP and port listening...

Example of what it'll look like when the Crashplan engine IS running...
Screen%2520Shot%25202013-10-28%2520at%252010.00.03%2520AM.png

8. To check the status/PID, run the following command (thank you topprospect): /usr/local/share/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine status

Screen%2520Shot%25202013-10-28%2520at%252010.00.12%2520AM.png

9. At this point, the Crashplan engine is running. You'll need to setup your headless client to connect to the Crashplan engine. You'll also need to add storage to the crashplan_1 jail for the engine to backup to the Crashplan cloud.

Take Aways: You will need to start the Crashplan engine manually after each jail or freenas restart. Hopefully this could be resolved in a future update. Otherwise, I've been up and running for a week now without an issue. Are the above steps the "proper" way of resolving the issue, I'm not sure. I know enough to be dangerous and learning more everyday but by no means an expert.

I hope this helps.

Exactly. I'm backing up 4 household machines to FreeNAS, then FreeNAS to Crashplan. Works great.

I'm having the same problems. linux.ko is loaded in the Freenas system, the plugin is turned on, and is launching, but port 4243 is never opened for listening. Output of the two log files, my ps -ax, and sockstat is below

I'm having the same problems. linux.ko is loaded in the Freenas system, the plugin is turned on, and is launching, but port 4243 is never opened for listening. Output of the two log files, my ps -ax, and sockstat is below

root@crashplan_1:/var/log/crashplan # less engine_output.log

corwin -- i've had similar log data and the end result was the JVM crashing. See my above instructions, it will get you up and going.

I finally got the crashplan UI to connect to the crashplan jail, however when I try to login on the UI, I get:

"! Unable to connect, check your network"

Does anyone have any idea on what I need to do, a search reveals nothing so far. I'm thinking it has something to do with my freenas box (or perhaps the jail) accessing the internet. I can "ping google.com" and do a "whois google.com" from a ssh session to both the jail and the freenas itself. Any ideas?

Has anyone gotten "Crashplan data did not validate, configure it first." Error when trying to start the crashplan plugin? I did have the plugin starting fine but deleted it and reconfigured my network settings and now I get that when I reinstall the plugin. I've been following Sully's post, but the settings before that step don't seem to make a difference.
