Hello,

I'm new to this forum but very interested in building my own NAS. At the moment I own two NAS devices, Qnap TS419-PII (12TB) and TS-210 (4TB). Because I noticed my 419-PII is getting slow as media server I'm looking for a replacement.
My 419-PII is a VPN client (anonymous access to internet) and the TS-210 uses a VPN server (remote access from the internet). The TS-210 is also a sync device for my data.
If possible, I would like to build my own NAS which is, as title says, low power consuming but faster as a TS419-PII. I want to use my old drives, (2x4TB, 2x2TB) which can be formatted before use.
I wonder if this is possible for less money than a new QNAP would cost?

thank you all very kindly

grtzz tom

Wow, funny. Well, let's get serious. ofcourse I want to upgrade so my TS-210 becomes obsolete, my TS419-PII becomes my backup server and a new NAS will become my prime server.
About power consumption, heck, I don't know. That's why I asked the question in this forum because I really don't know, what is possible.
Can a homebuild server be as low power consuming as a comparing NAS device?
And about price range, about 500 euros. The price a NAS would cost as I would replace my TS419. (without disks ofcourse)

I was. We need exact and quantified parameters to work within.
You could look at building an Atom C2000 series based system. Should idle less than 50 watts and be a LOT faster than a single core "NAS". I still don't know what your using it for or exactly what your expecting from it.
Have you done any research on system requirements for FreeNAS?

Hello, I'm using my TS-419 as a media/data server, vpn client, downloadstation and usenet acces. My new server must be capable to stream 4K content to my shieldTV in the future. Maybe, if fast enough I will think of other use. I looked up what a new QNAP NAS does and a TS-451A consumes idle, 12,1W and with 4x 2TB disks, 27W.
In my case, the NAS is 24/7 up so 27W sounds better as 50Watts idle. If a homebuild NAS consumes more than twice a QNAP, ok, it may be faster and more flexible, my choice would be a already build NAS. But thank you for being funny and your support.
