Hello,

I d like to build a nas running with freenas.
What I want : - 4 TB storage ( with redundancy)
- system able to ro run a plex media server
- price around 600 $

Do you think this is possible and do you have a hardware requirement ?

Thanks a lot,

So about 5TB of storage that you can use to 80%?

20% is enough to ensure redundancy ?
I may be looking to 6TB of storage actually

No, I meant, the recommendation is to plan for 80% capacity. Once you fill your raid to 80% it's time to start planning an upgrade. Once you get to 90% it's time to install the upgrade.

Thus if you want 4TB stored, that's 5TB available + redundancy.

Anyway, you need to decide if you want mirrors or Raidz2.

Time to do some research :)

Yes thank you,
I wanted to buy hardware today to get black friday's prices but I' m not ready yet.
I 'll do some researches. Thanks again.

Hi,

I think a bit more of what I d like.
My uses will be :
storage, torrent servor, file sharing, DLNA, plex.
I think I d like to build a mirror configuration for safety.

Therefore my harware would be :
- i3 processor
- motherboard
- 16GB RAM
- 120G SSD storage for the system
- 2X3T 3.5" HDD data storage
- power supply
- box able to get 2 extra 3.5 " HDD disks
- 16G usb disk

And this for aproximately 600$.
Do you think it is possible and do you have a typical hardware list ?

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the answer.
Someone has a hardware configuration for a DIY one for my uses ?

Someone has another hardware configuration that will fit the job ?
Thanks

You need to attack the problem in a different direction. Remove the cost of storage from the equation because that will be the same cost in every system. Think about the cost of the main computer itself, how much can you spend on that?

Let me explain... If you want to have storage for 4TB of data and you are only using this as a media server and nothing else then you could use two 5TB hard drives in a mirror configuration, or three 3TB drives in a RAIDZ1 configuration. These give you one drive failure tolerance. But if you are going to store somewhat important data and desire better redundancy (what we prefer to recommend) then you would add one more drive to the above configuration and have either a 3 way mirror or a RAIDZ2. There is one major advantage to the mirror and that is you can buy one or two drives now and add mirrors later. The RAIDZ you will need all three drives up front.

Current US costs for a 3TB WD Red is ~$100 x3 drives = $300.
Current US costs for a 5TB WD Red is ~$280 x2 drives = $560.

You can see there is a cost difference. Using the smaller drives is a better deal money wise. I'd only use the larger drives if physical space was a limitation.

My point here is you will spend at least $300 USD for hard drives alone. This leaves you $300 left in your budget for the computer hardware which is virtually impossible to obtain for that cost. You could buy a really cheap computer without ECC RAM and get away with it but there is the possibility that your data could become corrupt and that is just not what FreeNAS is designed for, but you could go down that path and save money if you are only using this as a media server, but I still would not recommend this because you will find out that you want to store other data on your system because it is available and so easy.

Another option is to buy the main components like the motherboard, CPU, RAM right now and purchase hard drives when you can afford them. Hard drive prices are coming down because SSD capacities are going up and becoming more affordable.

Good luck on your journey.

Here is an option for you. Just throw some drives in it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro-24-Bay-Chassis-SAS846TQ-SATA-Server-AMD-QC-2-2GHz-16GB-H8DME-2/201715070799?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIC.MBE&ao=2&asc=38530&meid=329ac6bd289b4bdfba7893dc36fde329&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=142173409507

Your mileage may vary... This may not actually do all that you want to do. The point is, if you want to hit that price point, you are going to have to sacrifice.
The best solution is to save up and buy a better server. That means you will need to spend more.

Thanks for all your answers.
I worked on the subject and I drew a hardware configuration :

Motherboard: ASRock E3C236D2I Mini ITX Server Motherboard
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5 SkyLake 3.0 GHz
RAM: 16 GB Kingston (2 X 8GB) SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2133 (KVR21E15D8/8)
Case: Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case
PSU: Sea Sonic S12G 550W ATX 550 Energy Star Certified 80Plus Gold (S12-550;SSR-550RT)
HD: 3x2T HDD SATA 6Gb/s 128MB Cache (raid5)
SSD system: Silicon Power Slim S55 2.5" 120GB
Boot Device: USB San Dsk 32 GB

Do you think it is good enough for my uses or is it too much and I can save some money by picking less performant componants ? Would be great because seems expensive for me

Thanks a lot,

A second configuration less expensive but performant I think :
SuperMicro X10SLM+-F
Intel Pentium G3240
Crucial 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3L-1600 ECC UDIMM
3x2TB Western Digial Red in RAID-Z
Cyberpower CP685AVR
Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case
Silicon Power Slim S55 2.5" 120GB
USB Scan Disk 32 GB

What do you think ?

With the skylake itx board, you should get a single 16GB dimm rather than filling both slots with 8GB Dimms

With the supermicro x10 board, you should look at an X11 board.

Thank you !
I'm looking for something not too expensive. The second configuration is quite cheap. Do you think performance will be great or is there a component not so good ?

Thanks,

It limits you to 32GB of ram, whereas an X11 board allows 4x 16GB.
