Hi, in a FreeNAS-11.0-U1 (aa82cc58d) I found this:

1624913713613.png

Last week I found one disk (ada2) was in an error state (I don't have a screenshot) and bought a new one and replaced it. At that moment ada0 and ada1 where ONLINE, but now I found them are in a DEGRADED state, what can have caused that?.

Here's the smartctl -x for ada0:

Code:
root@freenas:~ # smartctl -x /dev/ada0
smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [FreeBSD 11.0-STABLE amd64] (local build)

A great majority of these errors are in auto snapshots, but as of now, this doesnt look good. As a precaution id backup anything from this pool you cant live without.

Yes of course I'll backup as much as possible (this and past year's files), but apart from that, do you see anything wrong in the smartctl reports I posted early?.

Have a look thru your dmesg and see if theres anything goofy in there. Certainly you must have system alerts, what do those say?

cat /var/log/dmesg.today and cat /var/log/messages

With a such a temporal correlation, i.e. two disk going "bad" right after replacing another, chances are that it has something to do with that change. The usual suspect are the SATA cables. I would recommend to mark the cables, and then shuffle them. Take notes like "cable A from ada0 to ada2" and make sure all cables are inserted into their connectors properly. This should allow you to narrow down the issue to either drives or cables.

The power supply is also a candidate here, but I would start with the cables. It is more likely, especially with the timing right after the disk replacement, that something is wrong elsewhere, rather than two disk dying at the same time.

Yes, today I'll have that machine in my office to take a look at cables and power supply.

Have a look thru your dmesg and see if theres anything goofy in there. Certainly you must have system alerts, what do those say?

cat /var/log/dmesg.today and cat /var/log/messages

In cat /var/log/dmesg.today everything seems to be ok, well, I found this machine has an Intel i3 processor, but apart from that there are no errors. In /var/log/messages I found a couple of blocks like this on Jun 26 and Jun 28:

Code:
Jun 26 06:14:37 freenas ZFS: vdev state changed, pool_guid=690590319461003960 vdev_guid=13551296632619889811

And this on Jun 26:

Code:
Jun 26 06:03:32 freenas root: /etc/rc: WARNING: failed precmd routine for minio

Hi, I'm back with this machine. I've replaced the power supply with a ThermalTake SMART 430W and now I don't see any DEGRADED disks.

1625402311096.png

However, as you can see the system is in a resilver state that's taking ~20 hours and only did a 29% of the job.

What whorries me the most is the scan rate is lower every time I check.

Code:
root@freenas:~ # zpool status datos
  pool: datos
 state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices is currently being resilvered. The pool will
continue to function, possibly in a degraded state.
action: Wait for the resilver to complete.
scan: resilver in progress since Fri Jul 2 13:57:13 2021
1.25T scanned out of 4.20T at 25.3M/s, 33h59m to go
        422G resilvered, 29.67% done

errors: 149746 data errors, use '-v' for a list

As you can see the scan rate now is 25.3M/s, but a couple of hours ago it was over 30M/s.

That's quite a positive outcome coming from where you were, with potentially irrecoverable errors in metadata. Give it all the time it needs.

Although the Seagate Skyhawk model is not SMR, I would assume that their positioning for video surveillance might have something to do with. IIRC such drives are typically optimized for sequential writes, to ensure that no footage gets lost.

I agree, we shouldn't have picked those for this machine. This week we'll be building a new one with WD40FRX drives, and leave this as a 2nd backup.

Hmm, after finishing the resilvering it went back to the DEGRADED state:

:frown: Errors in metadata (<0x1c7>:<0x######>) could not be repaired after all. I'm afraid it's time to destroy the pool and restore all from backup.
Consider using raidz2 or higher for the new pool.

Finally I was able to copy everything from the failing pool (very slow process, the whole round trip took 4 days for 2.5Tb), did an SMART Extended Self Test and found one disk had errors and replaced it. Sadly with another Skyhawk provided by the customer :(.

Menawhile a new machine with 3xWD20EFRX disks was built as a replacement for this.
