Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1

Hello,

I just received an alert with subject message. This is one drive from my 4 drive total raidz2 pool. Each drive is 1TB in size. Below is smartctl output. Warranty time is over.

My skill for understanding smartctl is not good enough for giving a decision myself. I wonder if I must replace that drive.

I was thinking about increasing my pool to 4x4TB drives for a while. But, I still need sometime to save some more money for that.

since the smart test is failing I would order a new drive. Remember you don't have to replace all the drives at once, so you can start your plan for migrating to 4x4TB drives. You just won't see extra space until the last drive is replaced

By the way, your drive seems to be running very hot:

To increase the drive's lifetime you may want to keep them under 40°C...

I also noticed that for a long time but cannot manage to decrease their temperature in that Silverstone DS380 case

A pity because high temperatures (over 40°C) apparently have quite an impact on HDD's lifespan.
Of course you do the best you can with your constraints... :-O
Don't know that case but from the photos I see, you can have some fans on the back and on the side directly on the HDD tray, isn't that working out?

Apparently not enough even I clean side and top fans from dust.
Just checked again and back fan seems not operational. Warranties these days feels like adjusted :)

Yes, indeed I do not need to replace all 4 together. However, once purchased a hardware one wants to benefit at that moment of investing.
BTW, I still want to will wait a little longer before I actually replace the drive. It may hang on a while before error count starts increasing.

Hello again,

I just received results of my daily self tests. Same drive did not report error. Should I take it as there is no new error? Or, short test did not check the erroneous sectors?

The short test doesn't do much so it might have not seen any problem.
Run a long test to be able to see more errors (and even long tests don't necessarily see all the errors since it only does read tests).

I got another extended test on my drive and it did not report any problem

Is extended test is a complete surface test?

Yes, the extended or long test will test the complete surface but... only in read mode (i.e. non destructive).
To do a write test, you have to use a different tool like badblocks (which is destructive in write mode, that's why it is usually used for burn-in drive test and not for maintenance).

That is an annoying situation because now the error is gone... :smile:
I would closely monitor the drive and make sure the other SMART attributes are not increasing. And since you want to change your pool to 4x 4TB (I guess by expanding it one drive at a time), this drive would be the first candidate for an exchange. :smile:
