Hello community,
I recently got some problem on FreeNas 11-1 : got smart detection, and pool degraded.
First time, i replaced a drive... 2 days later, it was on another drive...
HDD are 10 months old, in a rack, 17 degre celsuis room, on UPS, and are 8x 4tb TOSHIBA N300 nas drives (model HDWQ140)
After long search on forums and updatelog, i found some tickets about it, and it seems that some smart error detection was solved on newer freenas versions.
Then i upgraded to 11-1U6.... All error was gone (as each time a clear error or reboot system), but 3 days later, the probem was coming back on another HDD.
Here is /log/messages about this drive :

here is volume status :

computer is superMicro, Xeon E5-2609, 32gb ecc ram.

controller is LSI Symbios logic SAS3008,

0x000a 4 6 Device-to-host register FISes sent due to a COMRESET

cause the message log say "UNIT ATTENTION : poweron, reset or bus device reset occured) (see captured screen before)

WHAT CAN I DO ?
Hdd proabaly not bad, computer top quality HDD build for NAS, good temp, all brand new material, last freeNas 11-1U6 version...

Did you test all drives for defect? Drives fail when new and when vary old, not as much in the middle.

Could also be a bad cable or port. Pull the failed drive and test on a separate machine.

at 16:02, first error is : smartd[2668]: Device: /dev/da2 [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data

is is a cause, or a consequence ? ....

I had some similar symptoms when trying to burn in some drives and found it was because there was old RAID frames (I believe that is the term but someone correct me if not) from the old array causing me quite a bit of a headache.

First thing you should do is move any data from those drives to a backup in case you discover more issues.
Second, you should run the short and long SMART tests on the drive via the CLI to see if anything jumps out (I think it's odd that in your post above, there is nothing in the printout so this would be a good place to start)

If you're not already familiar with the tests, you'll want to run the following:
Code:
smartctl -l selftest /dev/da2

This will give us some more information surrounding the last tests performed on the drive and a rough idea of the results.
For reference, here is the output on my drive:
Code:
root@freenas:~ # smartctl -l selftest /dev/da2
smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [FreeBSD 11.1-STABLE amd64] (local build)

# 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 118 -

Then we can move into investigating a bit more and start identifying what could be contributing to this.

I also see you mention there is an LSI SAS in play, are all of these 'failed' drives connected via the same card? (Very similar to my setup so I want to help where I can)

Yes all the 8 HDD on the SAS3008 card.
i just tried to disable "smart" option for this drive, clean errors, put this drive offline/online, wait for end of resilvering. Now it's "Healty". This way to do it work always fine with this problem, but only for 2....5 days.
Then i will see if removing smart will solve the problem.
I don't know if REAL problem will be detected if smart is off ....
if problem come back, il will put this drive offline and run extended smart tests....
