(RANT) Disappointed in WD Reds reliability.

Well for what's it's worth, I've have 60 3TB WD Red drives in production for just over 3 years now and have had to RMA 4 of them due to failed smart tests. Did you burn-in the drives before putting the arrays into production?

I didn't burn in the drives to be honest but do so now.

Seems like we have found the problem and the reason why there are warranties.

Yes I would have maybe caught them earlier in the burn in but it still doesn't change the fact that they consistently die on me.

Looks like you had a bit of bad luck. I don't personally place any stock in brand loyalty when it comes to drives. Having dealt with storage arrays for going on twenty years, the only thing I rely on is a solid backup scheme and bullet proof DR. Burn in helps weed out early failure and is worth the time upfront, but do keep a backup whenever possible. :)
