So I've been lurking around the forums over the past few days as I've recently build my first FreeNAS box to store raw video footage on. Going well so far but not sure if everything's quite right yet!

Hardware -
MB: Gigabyte Z97P-D3
CPU: Intel Core i3 (4170)
RAM: Kingston KVR16E11 8 GB
PSU: Corsair VS Series VS650
HDD: WD Red 2TB

The plan is to double the storage with each set of additional drives, I've mostly got my head round this but will most likely need additional RAM to support more storage anyway. Big thanks to everyone on here for the great how-to's!

Welcome to FreeNAS. Be careful how you add more storage, many people screw this up and put their data at risk because they haven't read the user guide or just don't understand how the system works. If you ever need help or clarification on anything FreeNAS, ensure you follow our rules outlined and post in an appropriate forum section. We are a fairly good bunch of people here.

London, I've been to the airport there a few times, headed to Plymouth for a few extended stays working on the UK submarines. Summer was nice, Winter was not so nice.

Thanks! Yeah, I will definitely do a lot of research before tackling this, ideally the next drive I add will just add redundancy (a mirror) to the existing 2TB then I'll start to plan out future storage upgrades. As the storage capacity is relatively small at the moment it's no issue to have to export all the data to a client or external HDD if I had to create a new pool.

Winter isn't the best here in the UK!

Only issue is that to convert a stripe to mirror you need to use the command line (stupid that)

Could I not just copy the 2TB of data onto a client drive over the network, delete the volume, and recreate it as a mirror with both 2TB drives?

Sure. Wouldn't it be quicker, safer and more reliable to just use a single command line?

It would, but unfortunately you can't do that either. To do it right, you need to partition the disk properly, determine the gptid of the data partition, add that to the pool, and then probably do something about the swap partition too. All entirely do-able, but more than just a single command line command (and probably needs to be written up on the wiki or in the resources section).
