This is the result for all disks with:

Code:
zdb -l /dev/ada4

I am not getting a good feeling about this

This is expected. ZFS (normally) lives in the p2 partitions of your drives. And your gpart show does show the p2 partitions. Try "zdb -l /dev/adaXp2".

Incidentally, does the USB boot drive have the ZFS info on it? Could that be why ifs list does not shoe it?)
Not really, it would have the volume/pool info and mount it automatically. If the ZFS pool is okay then it should be able to be imported and yours of course is not very happy right now. Folks will take their time helping you as to not rush into telling you that all is lost. If the pool can be recovered, that is the best outcome.

Yes ran Widdle3

Is ada4 the reason for my kernel panic? am I able to recover my data?
My new freenes Boot drive cannot see my pool for import?

ada4 seems to be the drive you should care about. You have a Multi_Zone_Error_Rate of 1. Others are fine, to me. Another note: you should not run a smart test every hour. short tests can be done once a week and a long test once a month or every 15 days.

Ah, bull. The whole point of SMART is to allow the early detection of a problem. Running a short once a week? Might as well not run it.

Short tests are deliberately intended not to interfere with the operation of a drive; every four or six hours works pretty well. Since this is the primary mechanism that exists to detect problems with a warm spare, and since running them at this frequency shouldn't impact a pool, this is quite reasonable.

The bigger problem is how to schedule longs. Longs are useful for identifying disks that are developing a problem, but they do require a full disk traversal of all LBA's. As with shorts, the design of SMART means that the drive does these tests in the background, but with a long test on a very busy pool, you could run into a problem, especially if a scrub or resilver was running at the same time. This was apparently discussed and dismissed as a nonissue; https://bugs.pcbsd.org/issues/7362

For what it's worth, my take on the whole thing is that if your pool is SO busy that it cannot handle normal access, a scrub, and a SMART long test at the same time, you don't have sufficient headroom in your pool's design, and you need to fix your pool. We're running shorts every four (six?) hours, longs twice a week, and then scrubs at 35 days. This is an optimal design, because the hard drive is much better suited to handle identifying its own issues; unlike a scrub, a SMART long test does a linear traversal of LBA's, and does so without transferring the data to the host. It will locate issues fairly quickly, which is the key thing you want SMART to do.

Your strategy is bad because you might not learn about a developing media defect for an entire month.

can you give advice on how I could recover some of my data?
Or is there a way to fix the boot USB drive?

What version of freenas was running prior to you installing a new version on USB? Maybe there is a pool version mismatch?

Is there an easy way to check this, the old USB will not boot.

Current version is FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201512121950

Is there a way for me to check the old boot disk, I can boot in single user mode

As a possible alternative, is it possible to pull the drives and mount them in a linux system to recover some of the data.

I'm not sure how to check the version using the single user mode.

No you can't use Linux.

Have you tried reinstalling to a new USB? The pool is completely separate from the USB freenas install.

Yes that is the only way I can boot in.
The problem is my volume/pool does not show up in the GUI so I cannot import the pool.

Zpool list also shows nothing.
The drives look ok see earlier in This thread.
I'm sure the data is fine it is just getting to it

ada1 had a read failure during the extended test, not sure why no one mentioned that. Run the long test again on drive ada1 again and make sure it passes the extended test. The only other indicator for that drive (and ada4) was a single ID 200 Multi-zone error but on it's own it generally is not of concern. Also I see no indication that ada4 is your problem, it appears to be more than that.

Question: What type of ZFS pool was this? RAIDZ1, RAIDZ2, MIRROR, STRIPED?
