That blows, like really blows. Whats the users feedback like? Return policy?

If i had to pick a seller to buy that switch from it would be this one

I'm using one of those for my AP but that's it. Been using the RB2011iLS for the routing and have had minimal performance hiccups. Only have brief issues when some one from China tries brute forcing an ssh connection. Im sure a higher performance router could withstand some of this knocking a little better. RouterOS does have a steep learning curve though.

OK so the Netgear GS748T switch was delivered and is junk! First thing I noticed was a badly twisted mount ear. Plugging it in resulted in the fans sounding like they were being feed an iron bar. Closer inspection found 2 fans were almost dead and grinding while slowly turning and the 3rd was grinding very loudly as it turned at various speeds. Fans are easy enough to replace so I moved on to test ports. Using new Cat6a cables I plugged its Port1 into my main switch, used Netgear's Smartwizard Discovery software from my desktop to find and assign an IP then pulled up the web interface... all good. Plugged a laptop into port 3 (static 192.168.1.245) and another into port 48 (192.168.1.58 via DHCP). From the laptop in port 48 I used "ping -t 192.168.1.245" got a couple replies, unplugged from port3 and into port5, etc along the top row. At port39 it failed to reply though link/speed leds lit up. OK 1 bad port.. bummer. Continuing on more and more started to fail. Switched out the laptop on port 48 to see if that port was failing however it didn't help. Pulled the switch - switch from port1 and inserted it into port39 and I could no longer pullup the web interface. Switched out cables and tested two more ports on the off chance and, as I knew, still no go. As I placed my hand on the top it was noticeably hot, far more then it should have been. Pulled power, disconnected laptops, cables, fired the thing back into the shipping box and emailed the seller.

Reminded me why I rarely order 2nd hand equipment!

I'm always hesitant buying second hand electronics of any sort. You just never know what you're gonna get.

I just bought a Mikrotik RB951G-2HND and it works "well enough". I can tell it bottlenecks with my 150Mbps internet and just a few simple firewall ruls, its a bit confusing even though I have lots of experience with pfsense, but the price was much lower than building a pfsense box (and much smaller). It throws up all over itself in the performance arena if you think you are going to use it as a VPN client though. I think I've seen 400KB/sec only once for a split second and I'm used to seeing 1MB/sec+ on my pfsense box that is over 1000 miles farther away (and has more latency as a result).

I've been playing with pfSense for awhile as I'll be using it between our FIOS router and internal network. Some of the talk about Mikrotik and their RouterOS. Many have mentioned, as you did, about firewall rules and VPNs having a large performance hit on it. This was one reason I hadn't given Mikrotik much attention.

That blows, like really blows. Whats the users feedback like? Return policy?

It does but oh well. I've emailed the seller explaining its useless as is. Auction states "30 days replacement warranty" but we'll see. As always, it on a credit card so I'm not worried. A bummer for sure though.

The seller replied and offered to refund my money or ship out a replacement saying to not bother shipping this one back. That's a plus since it saves me from the added shipping expense. He said they would retest the replacement switch again before shipping it out this afternoon.

The issue with this unit appears to be heat related. I plugged it in today and tested the ports and they worked fine until the last 15 when they started to fail. Going back many of the other ports also started to fail and the heat generated was quite a bit. Even with enough cooling it wouldn't be reliable so I'll wait and recycle it later.

Just to be contrary, there are plenty of us who operate small networks who have great success with eBay for used gear. There's some degree of being careful about who you purchase from, but also what you purchase. I'd probably be more cautious about the low end crap.

I'm with Jgreco, I've had 2 bad experiances out of a few 100 transactions. But those 2 were mainly shipping errors (I.E. seller didnt ship for like a week after item was paid for, etc) but that being said, all of my equipment is second hand and has worked for YEARS (knock on wood) but i've found seller who i buy from time and time again and cut me some pretty good deal (the one seller sold me x24 300GB velociraptor hdds for 5$ each, granted theyre used, but at that price...does it matter?) But some sellers of course have ups and downs, and sometimes UPS or fedex screws shit up lol.

I agree. I've been an eBay member for about 17 years now with a few thousand sales and purchases and 100% positive feedback. For the most part I've had great transactions. For those few times where I didn't, I never lost anything. eBay, PayPal or my Credit Card has always protected me. Most sellers are fairly honest. For those who aren't I don't waste time with.

This specific seller offered to refund my cash or ship out another, free of charge and didn't require that I ship the original part back. Thats pretty darn decent in my book. :)
