Yikes -- just seen another thread regarding this issue. https://www.truenas.com/community/t...0g-nic-for-freenas-that-actually-works.94945/

I'm using a Supermicro X11-SSL-CF Motherboard. I'm not sure this matters - the board however is quite old as I've had this unit for 3-4 years. It's for home use so it's nothing mission critical.

I have Unifi Switches (USW-Pro-24) with SFP+ capabilities with Cat6a wiring, although ideally I'd like to connect the FreeNAS server to the switch via DAC/SFP+.

I've run across this article referenced in a few forums from serve the home: https://www.servethehome.com/buyers...as-servers/top-picks-freenas-nics-networking/ which seem to be recommending Chelsio SFP+ networking cards -- specifically either the
  1. Chelsio T520-SO-CR
  2. Chelsio T520-CR
I've run across one forum within the TrueNas community that kind of addresses these cards: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/chelsio-t520-cr-vs-chelsio-t520-so-cr.54171/ however it seems that there may be a problem with these cards running hot and intermittent lockups with network or failure to boot.

Does anyone have any more insight into either of these cards, or would they recommend another SFP+ card or even a 10Gbase-T card.

Thanks

I like the SolarFlare SFN6122F cards. Dual-port SFP+ PCIe v2.0, and they're supported out-of-the-box by both FreeNAS/TrueNAS and VMware ESXi (v6.7, anyway). Can be had on fleabay for <$50:

I'm using two Chelsio T520-CR without any issues in TrueNAS CORE (and SCALE when I tested that). On my workstation I'm using it in Windows/OSX/Linux. In linux I've experienced a few times that it didn't initialize properly during boot, but when it's initialized there's no more problems.

Any 10 GbE card will run hot. Just make sure there's some airflow coming to it.

Quick followup on this thread.

I ended up purchasing this Solarflare card for $65 from ebay (prices really climbing in this pandemic): https://www.ebay.com/itm/392627208006
2m DAC cable attached to SFP+ card on the Unifi switch. Really impressed in worked out of the box without really any additional drivers needed which is great. I looked at the Chelsio cards, however this Solarflare card was really cheap.

For more information (for future readers; it seems OP has his solution), see also:

I'm running Chelsio T420s in my TrueNAS box, and my Proxmox hosts; they've been working well for some time now. Intel X520s are also pretty widely recommended.

I also run the T420 in my setup up. These cards do run HOT.
I use the active cooling version of the T420-CR:
Chelsio T420-CR with Active (FAN) Cooling
110-1146-40 C0 (Copper Heatsink)
PCB FAB 100-1120-00 Rev C
110-1146-40 E0 (Natural Aluminum Heatsink)
PCB FAB 100-1120-00 Rev C
