I'm sure there's a niche that's been screaming for this, but I can't think of a realistic scenario where ECC memory in a laptop (as in real laptop, not low-power workstation stuffed into a vaguely portable shell with a token battery that probably lasts just long enough for it to shut down) is really needed. It's a nice to have in a number of cases, though.

well the only thing i applaud on this move is that more people will hopefully use Xeon/ecc combinations, seeing as (i think/hope) the cpu will be cheaper then the actual full fledged xeon's.
And indeed there isn't a single reason i can think off to put ecc memory in a laptop. But then again, there is no reason why i wouldn't object to ECC-ram (if supported) instead of normal ram if given the choice. So meh.

I suppose it would be beneficial if you run FreeBSD with ZFS on your laptop. There were some times when I thought "I wish I could get a laptop with ECC memory". Then I started listing additional requirements and realized that I really wanted a slightly more portable desktop computer (or as Eric put it "a low-power workstation stuffed into a vaguely portable shell with a token battery that probably lasts just long enough for it to shut down").

ECC laptop is mandatory for anyone working in engineering fields where they do calculations that can affect safety.

For example, if you are a bridge designer and your laptop/desktop is used to do complex calculations to validate the safety of the bridge, ECC is required because you have to validate the calculations are accurate etc, and you either do ECC or you have to have independent systems run independent calculations and they must be within a certain amount of variable to be accepted.

If you work in fields that involve government approval many of the government oversight programs won't even bother comparing calculations. You must do it on a machine with ECC RAM or they won't even look at your project.

This has a small market, but a market that will gladly spend MASSIVE amounts of money for this kind of feature. You wouldn't believe how many engineers I've worked with that have to use ECC machines for approval of projects by government agencies.

Of course. The argument is that the set described by (is okay with a laptop-grade processor's computing power) AND (requires ECC) AND (requires true portability/lapability) is rather small. It's definitely the kind of market that will gladly go "shut up and take my money!", though.

I wouldn't mind having a NUC with ECC. I know a guy at work who needs ECC but doesn't need all the trappings of a full-size desktop computer.
