Hello

I am planning to build a FreeNAS machine for home use. I have build my own desktops several years ago but I have never built a NAS. Below I have listed the configuration I arrived at as well as the main use for this home NAS. I arrived at this configuration after going over the FreeNAS user guide as well as some forum posts. It would be great if I could get some feedback before I start purchasing and building.

Home NAS:
1. Storing and streaming video and audio. Most of the video is 720P/1040P or below. Ability to transcode is a requirement. I will be using Plex
2. Storing my full set of photos - mostly in camera RAW format. I intend to use tools to edit files on the NAS (i.e. Lightroom nondestructive edit)
3. Storing small files that will be shared over the home network [Excel, word, powerpoints]
4. Storing application binaries - software installation packages
5. Ability to encrypt some of the data. This is going to be mostly binary files related to personal accounting etc. But they will be frequently accessed. I dont need all of the data on the NFS to be encrypted.
6. Backup of of desk-/lap-tops at home

Below is the configuration I arrived at after going over the user guide as well as the hardware suggestions sticky thread [1]. It would be great if I can get some feedback.
---------
My Config

Motherboard: Supermicro X9SCM-F-O
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon/c202_c204/x9scm-f.cfm

CPU:
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1220L (25W TDP)
http://ark.intel.com/products/53401/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1220L-3M-Cache-2_20-GHz

OR

Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1260L (45W TDP)
http://ark.intel.com/products/52275/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1260L-8M-Cache-2_40-GHz?wapkw=e3-1260l

I am leaning towards the 1220L since it is lower TDP. I dont think I would need more than 2 cores.

Memory: 16 GB
DDR3

Recommended by SuperMicro but not available in India
MEM-DR380L-HL02-EU16 Hynix 8 GB ECC
MEM-DR380L-SL02-EU16 Samsung 8GB ECC

HDD: 6 disks
WD Red 1TB SATA-600

Corsair CS Series Modular CS450M 450 Watt power supply

I am planning to use the disks as a single RAIDZ2 VDEV. 3+2 and 1 hot spare or 4+2.
---------
Questions:
1. Does the config look reasonable for the purpose I intend to use it for?

2. Hynix and Samsung memory is not available in India. I am able to get only Kingston and Transcend. From this thread [2] is appears Kingston is a bad idea. Any opinions on Transcend?

3. Is a 450 Wt power supply sufficient for my config?

4. When a disk fails how does FreeNAS identify the physical disk that has to be replaced?

Thanks

Neither of those processors is close to being a good choice. They're only "low-power" because they limit themselves and are thus slower. Go with the non-L versions. They'll use just as much power at idle, but will be able to work harder when needed. TDP are meaningless for most home servers.
Any reason you're going with Ivy Bridge instead of Haswell stuff?

Transcend doesn't have much reputation around here, either way, but I doubt it's as reliable as the big guys.

450W should be plenty, but the Seasonic G-Series is much better than Corsair CX/CS.

Physical disks are identified by their serial number.

Looks like my config is very hard to get here in India (Supermicro is unavailable).

Would this config be reasonable?

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 v3 (3.1 GHz, 4-core, 8MB L3)

Motherboard: S1220V3RPS (LGA1150)

16 GB DDR3 1600 compatible RAM
6 1TB Western digital HDD Red
Corsair power supply (Seasonic not available)

Does this still sound like a reasonable config?

Don't mess with the "spare" feature - it doesn't work. Go with 6 disks in RAIDz2.

The motherboard (and the others in the series) you listed only has 4 SATA ports. You're going to need an add on HBA card or a different board that has more ports for 6 drives.

My mistake it does have 6 ports.

We don't have much experience with Intel server boards, but spec-wise, it should work. IPMI is probably a (costly) add-on module, though.

The S1200v3RPS which is the common board does NOT support Intel's remote management module. The RPM and RPL do. I think they all have the BCM. My RPS has no header on the PCB for the module.

Other than the lack of "free" ipmi on the Supermicro and a slight Intel price premium. The board is pretty much a rock solid vanilla choice. It supports vt-d properly, the sata ports are Intel, with some lsi firmware. I have no complaints, but never would have touched it without a smokin deal and it sitting right on the shelf begging.

Nothing to be afraid of if you can bet much better support on the Intel product.

Many thanks for the feedback.

I finally got my system and put it together.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 v3
Motherboard: S1200V3RPS (LGA1150)
Memory: 16 GB ECC Transcend
Western Digital HDD RED 1TB
8GB HP small profile USB drive.
450 watt power supply

FreeNAS is installed and the system boots. I now have to set up the system. I guess questions on software, encryption and zpools have to go to a different section of this forum. See me there soon
