Hi Marsha,

Good thing to ask because indeed, there are some concerns here.

RAM :
You are short. FreeNAS requires 8 Gig of RAM for it to be stable.

HD :
Looks like you are short here too... You need at least 2 drives to get any kind of redundancy.

About the casing:
Are you sure the one you will use is meant for 24/7 operation ? Many desktops are not designed for such a load and will overheat.

Optical Drive :
There is no real need for one.

Boot device :
You can not boot from the same hard drive that is hosting your data. So how do you plan to boot ? USB sticks are possible but not a favorite. Many will recommend you a small SSD instead.

This is my first reaction... May be some other forum contributor will have more to tell you...

Good luck with your setup,

Case is set up with additional fans and cooling so should not be a heat issue.

Im not worried about redundancy at first, but will head down that road as funds allow.

Why do you not like USB boots? What is an appropriate size for boot disk? I probably have a small HDD laying around somewhere.

Reliability problems. The USB memory sticks fail relatively quickly in many circumstances.

I guess that this means your primary control is the cost of the build?

Are you purchasing this hardware or trying to re-purpose something you already have?

All hardware listed above I already own. It used to be my everyday use computer but has been retired for several years. I have some older builds that I am sure are not applicable.

Cost is a major factor, this is going to be a pet project with no critical functions at this time. I am willing to spend some money but dont want a buch tied up in a build that I am not sure how I will utilize yet.
