Why can't I see my new volume?

Why can't I see my new volume?

In the process of a new install.
Server has 2 new unformatted WD 1tb hard drives, OS installed on 1gb usb stick, 2gb ram newer dual core Intel processor, installing from CD, and following tutorial on youtube.

clicked on Storage>Volumes>Create Volume
inputted the following:
Volume name = volume1
clicked on both check boxes, Member disks
Filesystem type UFS
clicked on Add Volume

Clicked on Storage>Volumes>mnt/volume1>Change Permissions
Box pops up, Change Permissions "Sorry, an error occurred"

Clicked on Storage>Volumes>View All Volumes
"There are no active volumes"

Why can't I see my new volume?

Stuck on my new install now...
please help.

I think I have a bad disk, as I was able to select one of the hard drives only and things began to work.
