Where to find config?

Hi all. Something broke and now FreeNAS wont boot (cant remember the exact errors, something about failing to mount). I haven't made a config backup in a long time so I'm worried I might have to reconfigure the system from scratch.

I used this program to browse the drive in Windows and have a look around...

Am I correct in thinking the files named "freenas-v1.db" and "freenas-v1.db.bak" are my config backups? Will I be able to apply those through the webGUI after doing a fresh install?

freenas-v1.db is the file you are looking for.

You must be running an older version of FreeNAS (before 9.3), if you were able to use that program to look at the filesystem. When you do your fresh install, do it with the same version of FreeNAS that you were running before.

When you want to restore your configuration in the webGUI, point it to the copy of the freenas-v1.db that you were able to recover.

When browsing I see this...

I did notice an option to update or upgrade my jails drive a while ago. Was there some kind of file system change or is that completely unrelated?
I never had any problems so I just left it alone.

I'm surprised to see that you can view a ZFS partition with that program.

Given your screenshot, I'd do a fresh install of 9.10-STABLE-201606270534 and restore the configuration backup. You can download that version from here: http://download.freenas.org/9.10/STABLE/201606270534/

When you upgraded from 9.3x to 9.10x, the underlying version of FreeBSD changed to 10.3 (was 9.x before).

Search the forum for information regarding your jails and 9.10. I don't use jails.

Ok thanks I will do that and see what happens.

Ye that program seems pretty good. You can only retrieve files under 700KB without a license though.
