I just installed Freenas and setup emailing.
Then I setup a zfs Raid-Z volume.

I wanted to test what happens when a disk fails, so i pulled out one disk.
But nothing happend, the volume was still shown as healthy.

Then I rebooted Freenas and the volume was shown as degraded.
But still I don't got a mail.

I can be sure that emailing works because I receive the test-mail and I receive a mail that I should change my password when I boot Freenas.

Why does Freenas not recognize that one drive is missing?

Every morning at 3 AM I get two emails, one is a security email and one is a status email. Look in the status email (the long one).

As for the volume still showing as healthy once you pulled the connector, try to write to it or read from it. It should switch to degraded. I haven't tested this in 2 years and FreeNAS has changed a bit. Also please post what version of FreeNAS you are running when you ask a question, and sometimes we might need to know your system configuration to give you an answer so keep that in mind as well.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I'm using Freenas 8.3.0.

What happens when I don't use my nas say for a week.
Does Freenas than changes the status to degraded after one week? This would be very bad.
Normaly I want to get instantly notified if something happens with the drives.

Are you saying the NAS is turned off for a week? If so, well you can't expect a miracle. If you are saying the NAS is powered up but just not accessed well they you should get a nightly email with the status. You should test it out or do a search of the forum, many people have checked this out as well. Wish I could give you the answer you want to hear but I just don't have it since I haven't tested this in over 2 years.

It's up, but not accessed for a week.

Can I change the behaviour of sending an email?
I thought about shutting the nas down in the night, so i would never get an email :-(

I will do some more test. I'm just evaluating which NAS OS I should use.
Freenas, NAS4Free or OpenMediaVault.

The best advice I can give is:

1. Wait patiently for FreeNAS to be based on FreeBSD 9.
2. Use the nightly emails and SMART emails.
3. If 1 & 2 don't work for you try one of those others you mentioned. They may or may not be better.
