What do you do with failed disks pulled out of your FreeNAS box?

Many times we replace disks even on the slightest signs of failure. Some have very few bad sectors, some have many. What would you do?

Kid's sabre
- bamboo for blade
- platter for disc guard / top of knucklebow
- HDD top cover for knucklebow (hammer to shape with ball peen hammer)
- pipe insulation for padding on blade
- duct tape to hold it all together

Then kids can resolve disputes through duels. Basically, parenting 101.

That's what the platters are for, they shatter quite spectacularly. Harvest the magnets, shoot the platters.

In that vein, you could remove the top cover, expose the platters / compents, install a clock kit, and sell the clocks on etsy.

Another idea, rip out the guts and make a custom caddy for 2.5" drives inside the 3.5" drive. I'm pretty sure there's a 'yo dawg' here.

I sold a lot of six with bad sectors on eBay to a company that does drive recovery. I listed them as "parts only / not working" and stipulated that they had bad sectors. I got $10 a drive plus shipping for something that had no value to me.

Cash in hand is more fun than target practice.

I remove drives as soon as they start showing bad sectors and run them through a DOD wipe with DBAN. A drive that starts with 2 bad sectors can sometimes have 4000 by the time DBAN is done, but I would rather be comfortable with my data not getting recovered.

I copied this when I first started the resilver. Looks like it might take a while...
The disk is not a year old yet, so it will go back to WD for warranty replacement.

Yeah need a shoot it in there. No better way to destroy any chance of recovery from an old disk.

But I have taken old drives and harvested the magnets for little projects, used the platters to make a clock face (really cool looking, need to find a pic and post it) then either toss or recycle the rest unless I can find a use for the parts.
