I have 2x WD30EZRX in my HP N54l.

9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 093 093 000 Old_age Always - 5225 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 176 176 000 Old_age Always - 72826
I'm not sure if this is excessive or not ?

Cheers,

Made a new post as this has nothing to do with greens vs reds.

That's a bit high. The drives are rated for 250k or so load cycles. There have been people that have ended up with that many in just a few months because they didn't use wdidle.exe. I would make it a priority to use wdidle.exe on your disks whenever possible. It literally takes just a few seconds to do.

Thanks,

Apologies for the hijack !

My fag packet sums put my drive life span at just over 2 years at that rate !!!

I presume I can boot freedos from USB on my hp n54 to do this.

Um.. I think that the wdidle tool fails to work under FreeDOS. I believe you have to use the tried and true MS-DOS. If I'm not mistaken you are free to use MS-DOS 6.22 now as Microsoft has agreed to let anyone use 6.22 for free.

You can run wdidle3 on the Red's without problem. I've read here that you should use /S300 instead of /D with ERZX drives. But I guess you could just give it a try.

Thanks, Do you know if I can just go to view disks and edit HDD Standby to 300 or 330 instead and reboot?

HDD Standby does something different than the wdidle tool. Many people argue that you should disable HDD standby completely in a NAS - you'll find some threads in the forum about it.
If you want the LCCs to go down you have to use wdidle.

I've never heard of a need to use wdidle on WD Reds. Kind of odd to be honest(but the evidence you provided is pretty conclusive).

So I'd try running the wdidle tool on the WD Reds and see if it works. If it does, please post back so I know. I'm kind of the WD unofficial spokesperson in these parts so I like to try to keep up with all available info on WD.

Update: Ran Wdidle3 and the timer was set on the WD Red for 8 sec, use command wdidle.exe/D and turn it off completely.

Here the smart value I will update again tomorrow to see if wdidle stop the excessive load cycle counts. I just don't get why Western Digital would have this enable at 8 second on a red drive by default, after all the do have a three year warranty and my drive more than likely would of died before a year! Seems odd, BTY this specific model was made in Thailand.

Code:
1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always - 0

3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 138 134 021 Pre-fail Always - 4100

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 0

7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x002e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0

9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 099 099 000 Old_age Always - 810

Called Western Digital again found a number for Red support, since I never heard of this issue on the Reds and they said that s the feature that changes the drives speed called IntelliPower (heard of this for Greens but not Reds) on load and that this is normal. Strange since the spec sheet on the drive states (Load/unload cycles 600,000).

Interesting Artilce on the reds on AnandTech from 2012 in their review the head parking is completely disabled by default. But the model I received last month from Amazon is defaulted to 8 seconds. I know for NAS applications, it is better to leave head parking being disabled. But even at 50,000 cycles a month I would reach potential failure in a years time. Maybe the SMART values are not that important with newer drive technology and intellipower feature causing such high values.

Is this a red or a green drive? I've ran WDIDLE on my greens and disabled.. after one died.. A newer green just exceeded 100k in about a year in a Windows 7 install for parents.. Generally all settings left at default to see what would happen.. If Red's are shipping with this idle feature could be an issue.. I thought reds had long idle times and/or it was disabled for 24/7 use..

I agree I was under the impression that Reds would be NAS ready and would not have this feature enable. My default value was 8 seconds this is horrible. I disable with wdidle and since I can send my drives back to Amazon for return I order new Reds and report back if this is also the default on the new drives once received. If this is the cause I would recommend just buying the Greens since you need to run wdidle anyway.

I looked at all my Red drives (six of them, all 2TB) and the highest load count I had was 250. That drive has 10692 hours (~15 months) of run time. There was a period of time where I would sleep the drives but that was back when I used FreeNAS 8.2.x and I don't do that with FreeNAS 9.x due to the way jails are implemented which would spin up the drives frequently. The Red drives do not have APM or AAM so I don't know if you had those set on your machine either. I'd be curious on what the firmware version is on your Red drives. Maybe if you could post the results of 'smartctl -x /dev/ada0' (adjust to the hard drive you are looking at). Also you never stated the SATA interface, is it directly to a MB connector or are you using an HBA?

I'm just trying to get the big picture is all.
