@joeschmuck

Sorry traveling day of work, but I run 5 jails. I had to reinstall all my jails yesterday evening and my smart report this morning did not show a change in LCC's I am very happy with freenas and most importantly the support from this forum but the jails are a pain in the rear every time I upgrade freenas and this time from restoring from a backup.

Also the first drive in the report is a VelociRaptor used solely for Time Machine Backups for my MacBook. The rest are part of my pool.

Seems like Western Digital is making changes with drives where the idle timer was set to 8 seconds after learning of thier mistake.

Thank you for your questions and for being a Western Digital customer.

This red drive is designed for high duty cycle. This means the drive is designed to be accessed constantly. The high Park cycle count means that the drive is simply not being accessed very much. The IDLE 3 utility is designed for Green Drives. To answer your question of either increasing the time in the Park cycle or completely disabling it. I recommend increasing the time to see if that works well for you. If you completely disable it then you should be checking the drive periodically with diagnostic tests. Your statement about the fact the drive was not set to 8 seconds when you received it. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I have forwarded that information to our internal drive department.

I believe in the right tool for the right job. I have provided you a link to the tool to change the time for the Park Cycle from 8 seconds to 300 seconds on your red drive.

If you are reading this trying to decide whether to run WDIDLE or equivalent for your green/reds (even to check timer) the answer is yes! :)

Well, I can guarantee you that this is rubbish.

I have their latest Red, with the latest firmware available.
Their upgrade tool did nothing and stated I didn't need the update.

Yet, the idle timer value was set to 8s, and after only 70 days of use on one machine I have a cycle count of 64k, and one another box (accessed less often) I have 135k.

The WD5741 *not* change the idle timer. It is a firmware upgrade (according to the message stating that the firmware didn't need upgrading and was the latest available). I still had to run the wdidle3 utility

135k cycles in 70 days.... go wonder....

Can somebody confirm 100% what the red tool is doing then? Maybe your update didn't take to the drive? One off problem? I swear somebody posted saying their timer changed to 300s usin the new wd red tool..

Edit: WD probably missed the new batches of drives.. Or software "thinks" it doesn't need an update when it does.. Either way I will always use WDIDLE as it doesn't look like custom/individual settings will take with the new red tool and/or wont list timers?
