as of freenas 9.1.0 rc2 the compiled the image back down to 2gb so they're recommending 4gb again. i agree with gpsguy, you could possibly squeak by with a 2gb stick but why not use an 8gb, that way you can have some future compatibility with possibly larger software or plug-ins .... not to mention more reliability since they usually are non slc flash chips within the stick & are usually the cheapest that can be found like tlc memory....and you could benefit from the write level wear being handled better by having more unused memory internally. besides the pricing difference is usually a few dollars.
You won't typically see USB sticks that have any kind of wear leveling. But yeah, get a 4GB of 8GB. It might be useful to have those few extra GB someday if you want to repurpose the USB for something else.
