Did you actually choose the stick? I.e., did you press the spacebar to put an asterisk next to it?

You really need different hardware.

Yes..i used the new stick...if new ver11 stick is plugged in system where data hard disks are still connected to..i get message if i want to install freenas..i did choose yes there..so after ram warning message i get third message where i want to install on...hd1 or hd2 or stick...if u choose stick hrre i get message...you have to use at minimum one hard disk...but i am not sure if any of my own data will be overwritten then??? And i do not know which hd 1 or 2 i did use longer time ago for old version of freenas. Why am i asked..i thought freenas can be installed completly on a stick...

i thought freenas can be installed completly on a stick.
It can. The odds are near 100% that you're doing something wrong. Is this the message you're getting?
VirtualBox_FreeNAS-test_04_08_2017_05_59_27.png

If so, you need to do what I said above, and what the installer screen says: PRESS THE SPACE BAR to select the device you want to install onto. It isn't enough to simply pick it with the arrow keys, you need to press the space bar to select the target device so it has an asterisk next to it. It will look like this:

Correct, hit spacebar now.. got a bit further,
told to install on 8 gb stick.. hit space bar, asterix to be seen, hit enter..
new error message:
/dev/da0
operation not permitted, freenas install failed on da0

checked if stick is write protected, not found any hint to that, looks good
thx for help!

Frankly, before going any further I would back up any critical data that you can't afford to lose.

Also, I don't think you can restore a FreeNAS 9.2.1.9 config into 11.

If you want to try an upgrade, I would try to get to 9.3 first.

..as told before.. my old stick (2 or 4 GB?) is a 32bit freenas boot stick.. and that allows only up to 9.2.1.9 if i am correct?
so i can not upgrade to 9.3 or?
the new stick, the 8 GB one .. is with boot files for 64 Bit Freenas...to install Version 11...
The most important Data is backed up since beginning of the try and error action..

No you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit, but as @danb35 anf others have said, install an older (9.x) 64 bit version of FreeNAS and restore your old configuration.

If try to jump directly to 11, you'll need to redo your configuration. You didn't seem to want to do that.

oki, now i see, an older 9.x version of 64 bit freenas..and restore the 32 bit settings in that 9.x version and then afterwards do an upgrade to version 11 64 bit correct?

so i should take for example
https://download.freenas.org/9.10/RELEASE/x64/
and prepare a stick with that first step

-->> done, see:
C:/Users/xx/Desktop/FreeNAS-9.10-RELEASE.iso as source
used windiskimager ...

Yes, but don't start with 9.10.

When I said an older version of 9.x, I meant the 64 bit version of 9.2.1.9 or 9.3. These are based on FreeBSD 9. You should be able to restore your configuration into these versions.

FreeNAS 9.10 is relatively new and based on FreeBSD 10. I don't think you'll be able to restore your configuration to it.

FreeNAS 11 (based on FreeBSD 11) was the successor to FreeNAS 9.10

Let's try to get to 9.3 first, then upgrade to 9.10 or 11

If you have the install FreeNAS installation on a USB stick and want to install it to a USB stick, you'll need two flash drives. One with the installation media, the other as a target for the install.

Prior to FreeNAS 9.3, the boot device was a fixed size (~3GB). Beginning with 9.3, it now uses ZFS and one can take advantage of larger boot disk sizes.

new window.. select where to install..

so will download
https://download.freenas.org/9.3/RELEASE/x64/
FreeNAS-9.3-RELEASE.iso
and image it with win-image on an x GB Stick.
then plug into my nas.. and insert a second empty minimum 8 GB Stick on the same nas. boot from stick and
then the second empty stick should be listed as installation media, correct?

Yes

After the new one boots up - skip the initial startup wizard (or whatever it's called).

Restore your old config and restart. See if it's working like it did before.

stick configured using https://download.freenas.org/9.3/RELEASE/x64/
FreeNAS-9.3-RELEASE.iso and winimage.. will put it into nas and additionally a 8 gb empty usb stick and try to install 9.3 64 bit then on that empty 8 gb stick?
afterwards i will remove the stick with the image and try to boot from the 8 gb additional stick with hopefully freenas 9.3 64 bit on it then?

Correct. Just don't run the startup wizard. After it boots try restoring the configuration filed that you saved previously.

update:
- i think i am a step forward or two..
- downloaded image as adviced..64 bit...9.3 version..
- imaged that onto a usb stick one..
- added another usb stick..two.. and installed finally on that one using stick 1 after reboot
- booted nas from stick 2..
- used webinterface available then and imported old 32 bit config.
-after reboot webinterface available again.. with stored config!
- added default route to router..
- upgraded version of freenas using freenas upgrade tool built in..
now i run:
FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201604150515
hopefully this version is!! as i imagine a 64 bit version.. ?????
9.3..
current ram is shown as Speicher 4061MB on processor
Plattform Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU D525 @ 1.80GHz

so .. next step.. how to upgrade that one further??

WARNUNG: The 9.3-STABLE Train is now in Maintenance Mode. No new features or non-essential changes will be made. Please switch to the 9.10-STABLE train for active support.

WARNUNG: New feature flags are available for volume Volume1. Refer to the "Upgrading a ZFS Pool" section of the User Guide for instructions.

- first of all did a config save of the new version on a external hard disk..:>)))
freenas-FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201604150515-2017091023xxx.db

automatic upgrade not possible as it seems.. how to upgrade to minimum 9.10??

-->> download :
https://download.freenas.org/10/RELEASE/x64/
FreeNAS-Corral-RELEASE.iso 15-Mar-2017 20:19 845068288
and then?

...although your hardware is entirely inadequate to safely run any version of FreeNAS with ZFS volumes.
