I think the dev tools command is a good thing as people posting for support can be easily detected. It's a great compromise. At that point, it's on them to deal with lack of support or reverting to standard behavior.
And hopefully they've also added a flag to the logs to automatically flag the abnormal state/config.

Yes, I agree that having the dev tools command will help in some cases.

The unfortunate thing is that some people will break their SCALE installation using the dev mode. But, demand or get aggressive for help. When the response is save the configuration and re-install, they may go ballistic because that removes some functionality they added and MUST have working. (Even though that added functionality may very well be the thing that broke SCALE.)

And yes, we can remind them they are in unsupported / uncharted waters. However, as has been seen over the last 2 years, their have been too many SCALE users that just won't accept that answer.

I can sum up the problem:

Linux people think that because SCALE is based on Linux, it MUST be a Linux distro and manageable as such.
Well, and though IX will know if the trouble ticket the system has been modified, anyone on these forums will not. So, one can volunteer and whole bunch of time trying to help someone and find out the problem was they installed a later version or whatever.

But I agree with you.

It is, the issue then becomes people looking for help here will waste someones volunteered time on a problem they caused, and we don't see that they have modified their system. Not saying that's you just saying it will happen too often.

Yes, hidden problems can at times be a waste of energy to help with.

While I want to be helpful, sometimes the "correct" answer is start over. That means new install to new boot device, probably reconfigure entire server instead of restoring config backup, and restoring any data from backup.

Experienced people in these forums have started to recognize that SCALE is so much more effort to help with, than Core ever was. People come with some of the oddest expectations. That was one reason why I wrote;
By the way, if you find something to add or improve in that intro, add a post to that Resource's discussion thread.

IX Systems just confirmed that cobia has additional blocks. So maybe take this experience to be a little less dismissive of other people having issues.

I knew Cobia had additional blocks. Re-read what I wrote and indicate where any of my answers were not applicable given that. Regardless of changes that might have happened in Cobia, the correct answer remains that TrueNAS is an appliance OS and that driver fiddling is not supported and in fact becomes a real problem for reasons previously explained, most recently and succinctly by Arwen. To claim that I'm dismissive of people having issues is really disrespectful in light of the thousands of messages I've posted and dozens of stickies and resources discussing critical topics. Users are expected to understand what they're installing on their systems, and your apparent failure to comprehend that this is an appliance operating system does not obligate me to treat you with extra deference. We've always told people that this is an appliance operating system and that changes to the OS or installation of drivers isn't supported, even if you might be able to find a way to cram them into a TrueNAS system. Again, see Arwen's explanation. You need to disabuse yourself of this notion that this is just a generic Linux that is yours to do with as you wish.

maybe they should just follow steam deck, make boot pool read only, put config/user data on system/app pool instead of boot pool.

as long as boot pool is writable, someone somewhere will try to make changes.

Hardware changes and trust me when I say this, I am waiting for the day that my SATA ports on my add-on card stop working, and it's a very good possibility. I would caution anyone who wants to modify the TrueNAS application. Yes you can do it but you take all the risk and cannot complain when it does not work (although people do complain). I generate my own modifications and I'm the one taking the risk. Once I have a working change I "may" offer it to a few others, others I trust that have the proper knowledge in how to implement the changes, but only if they want them. I use to compile FreeNAS 8 & 9, stopped at 10. You can compile your own today as well I believe but I have not done so myself. You are on your own and if the software does not work, you can submit a ticket, change the hardware, or modify the software if you have the skill to do so. Personally I would not expect much from a free piece of software, however I am impressed with TrueNAS. Nope, I don't get paid by them, it's just a hobby for me.

Alright, let's sum this up:

Updates to any part of the system, separately from official updates, are not supported. "Not supported" means "actively discouraged including via technical means".
Users are of course free to do as they wish with their computer, but circumventing these measures will have an impact in terms of what support they can expect from iX or the community.

Also, a gentle reminder that nobody is entitled to specific information and it is every user's individual right to not provide said information. If a consensus emerges insofar as nobody provides a specific piece of information, that is it, end of story.
As a sidenote, the mod team has not and is not likely to censor or otherwise restrict the dissemination of instructions on how to do whatever you want with your system.
