ffs, it's like pulling teeth. Give your complete hardware specs. Motherboard, disk controller (if used), power supply, etc.

SATA cards (other than LSI HBAs) are always suspicious. Are the drives connected to that, or directly to your motherboard? And with only four disks, why have a separate SATA card anyway?

Because the motherboard didn't have enough ports simply. I originally had bought a different motherboard but I got a DOA motherboard twice send from the supplier. So I had to get a different motherboard.

This was what I originally chose

MK ASRock C2750D4 AVOTON Octacore mITX Embedded CPU

How so? The board you mention has five SATA ports. You have four disks. Four is less than five.

I simply can't remember on the top of my head at the moment. It has been a year since I build this. But there was a reason why we had to get a SATA card.

So what is the SATA card. Specific brand and model please.

This is exactly why I asked for a full hardware list. As @danb35 mentioned that card is suspicious and could be the cause of your host reset/checksum errors.

Seems strange that this would suddenly cause checksum errors. There nothing connected to the card ATM. I checked. The reason why it is there is because I build the server with the option to add more drives later. As mentioned earlier the motherboard I installed only had 5 SATA ports.

Well I did the smartctl scan of the drive and it didn't find any errors.

So what to do now?

This disk is dead or is having some kind of issue. You should replace it or wiggle the cable or something. I think you ran the first smart test again the wrong disk.

No I ran on the right disk. But the test completed before it went from 1 checksome error to DEGRADED state.

It's now been suggested a few times that you check cables and connections--I even recommended you check that before you mess with disk troubleshooting. Have you?

Well, I checked everything and every connection and started the machine up again and it still complains about single checksum error on ada2. Waiting to see when it sets the drive to degraded. So what to do? Do I buy a new drive and replace the drive or can I fix this any way? If I buy a new drive do I put it in the machine and taske old offline and click replace in Freenas web client? But the way it is a raidz2 build without hotswap so I have to turn off the machine in order to replace the drive.

The manual is your friend:
