I've been struggling for some time to get ports of MythTV, VDR and XBMC to work within a portjail on FreeNAS 9.x.

My requirement is simple, I want a single box to record and store scheduled television programs so I can watch them via DLNA enabled devices. I have a FreeNAS 9.2 RC box already set up and working nicely as a DLNA server and can play videos happily on my smart TV; I would like to add the ability to record programs directly using the same box. What I don't want is yet another machine set up, using electricity, when I have a server already there that is mostly idle. I don't need the server to be able to output the video directly, just to provide a web interface so I can schedule recordings. I'm happy to reorganise recordings into their appropriate folders after they've been recorded, so I don't need any sophisticated behaviour here.

Could someone with a better understanding of FreeNAS, PC-BSD or whatever suggest a way to achieve this? If it can be done with a port of the applications already mentioned then that would be great but could I please have a step by step guide for how to achieve this? Every article I've found and read seems to relate to Linux or a non jail based installation of the software and/or assumes a knowledge of UNIX/BSD that I simply don't have. Other articles seem to descend into dogmatic arguments over whether this is appropriate for a NAS device. However, if there is justification for the likes of Sickbeard and SAB etc. there ought to be a similar justification for a TV recorder, surely?
