Turn off via IPMI - bad?

Is turning off your FreeNAS box via IPMI bad? Vs powering off via SSH.

You want to do an orderly shutdown, not shut the system down hard. There are ways to do this via IPMI, but you should ensure you're configured to do so.

There's nothing to 'connect'. The IPMI options in the web GUI are merely a convenient way to assign an IP to your IPMI if you don't already have one. There's no special handshake they do so that you can do a shutdown.

When you do 'shutdown' in IPMI, it sends the shutdown command to the system, much like if you just tapped the power button. The force shutdown option is like if you just hold the power button down.

Nothing special about IPMI in the web GUI.

That's not what I said.

If you tap the power button ACPI sends a signal to gracefully shut down.

If you hold the power button you are just cutting power which is forceful.

A lot of times there will be 2 options from IPMI, one being to shutdown and another being to power off. Depends on what you have available in your IPMI

(disregarding the fact that I can enter the freenas console via ipmi to shutdown the freenas way via ipmi :) )
