Hey,

My TrueNAS scale keeps crashing (unresponsive on the network). When i look at the video output on the TrueNAS box, I either find it on the default console set up screen frozen (cursor not flashing) or with output as shown in the attached images.

This happens around once per day and i have to physically reboot it.

Can anyone offer any advice on where to start?

Absolutely no idea as you give no hardware details - please read the forum rules as post your hardware fully
We need to know what hardware, how its plugged in. Details like HDD's, Pool Format, How and to what the are plugged in, Video Card, Physical / Virtual, Memory (including type of memory), Network Cards, PSU, Motherboard. Even the case can matter (although only occaisonally). Look at my signature for an example [Note to myself, when I remember the PSU details - add it]

Having said all that.
My got first test for freezing machine is to run a memtest at least overnight, multiple passes and see what happens

Hello,

Thank you for the reply.

I ran a memtest for several hours and there were no errors.

I was hoping the error messages would inform someone as to the cause of the error.

I am running:
1700x ryzen
370x mother board
2x 16gb DDR 4 ram
2x 8gb DDR 4 ram
Sas6 controller in it mod
3x 4tb sas6 drives
4x 250gb sata SSD drives
1x 240gb sata SSD boot drive.
And 260x graphics card (was doing this before I put this in)
Evga 750w psu

One pool, 3x4tb z1 pool with 4x stripe SSD cache vdev

Whats a SAS6 Controller? What model exactly?

Have you turned off everything to do with power saving in the motherboard BIOS - this is a common issue with Ryzen boards

As far as i can tell from experience the problem is only present with 1st and 2nd gen Ryzen cpus. When i was using a 1600x and a friend of mine was using a 2700x we had the same problem. We both switched to a 3700x and i have all bios power saving settings enabled and no problems.
Seems it is a architechture problem with the first two ryzen generations.

Edit
Try disabling AMD Cool&Quit, ERP-Ready and Global C-States
These were the settings i had to disable for the 1600x to become stable and dont crash

I don't recall having these issues before but I will try those suggestions.

Regarding the SAS6 controller, it's a LSI SAS SATA 9201-8I 6G/s 8 Ports RAID Controller in IT mode.

For your own benefit I'll mention there are lots of threads here explaining gaming hardware has an expected lifespan of approximately 3 years, which is why repurposing gaming rigs like the MSI X370 XPower Gaming Titanium is not recommended. The first, and least frustrating thing you may want to do is change out the mainboard and RAM and see if the system works, and if so troubleshoot (in a spare box) what about the removed hardware is causing the issue.

The other friendly inquiry is to ask if you set up your NAS based on a YouTuber video, and which one?

We're here to help, some background information on where you're coming from and how you got here allow us to understand your unique situation.

It appears that I had to disable C-states to restore stability. Although, now my CPU consumes 15-20 more watts due to not being able to go into an idle state.

When I have time I'll look into if there's a BIOS update that may have fixed this.
