You have to be a lot clearer. What do you want to change about your pool's layout? Do you want to replace the two 2 TB disks? Do you want to change the structure of the pool?

You'd have to destroy the pool, moving the data elsewhere temporarily.

Why not add the 4 new drives to the system, create a new pool, transfer the data, remove the old pool, rename the new pool?

Worst case is do a scrub to make sure the data is in good shape, detach and remove the pool physically, put the new drives in and build a new pool, detach 2 drives, add two drives from the old pool and reattach, copy the data. Then detach the two old drives, reattach the 2 new sidelined drives and the pool rebuilds. Totally doable in my book.

Same concept, but it requires four new disks instead of two.

That's true. There are other ways to do this with imply adding 2 drives but it's risky.

Hard drives are like cars, they don't last forever though we wish they would, and it's good to have a spare on hand in case one breaks. I'd want to have a spare or two if possible given that the size of the drives hints the drives are older.

Backups...I always wonder if users have backups and verify they're good.
