While zfs-2.1.6 hasn’t been tagged there is still a lot of good stuff in the staging branch we want to make it into upcoming releases.

What does this imply? Is TrueNAS Core 13.0-U2 the "upcoming release"?

At the time the Jira ticket was opened, U2 was the upcoming release.

@winnielinnie if you actually check the release notes you will find that
both are in U2. See "Improvements" section.

This is what I was trying to understand. Is it that the "lots of good stuff" in 2.1.6-staging are brought it in with U2 (the "upcoming" release), even though ZFS reports its version as "2.1.5" when checked on the server?

Hi,

just updated from TrueNAS 13.0-U1.1. Sadly U2 doesn't come up completely, I had to boot into U1.1 environment again. I tried twice, but U2 always makes the kernel panic.
Unfortunately I just don't know how to provide details. How can I help here?

Environment: TrueNAS 13.0-U1.1 in KVM on Proxmox. I'm using this environment since 12.0-U7 and updated always went smooth.

Bye,
Chris

1. According to the issue in JIRA "2.1.6 has not been tagged, yet." So the system will naturally report 2.1.5.
2. The issue (NAS-117707) explicitly refers to "merging auf 2.1.6-staging", is closed and according to the release notes part of U2.

So, yes, 2.1.6-staging is part of U2. I do not understand how the facts could be read any differently.

So I've two screenshots. First one is right before the panic, second is it.

Sorry, your attachments didn't come in.

For folks having difficulties with kernel panics after importing their pool:
  • In 13.0-U1.1, did you upgrade your pool or not before the U2 upgrade?
  • Did you verify your pool is healthy with a scrub before the U2 upgrade?
  • Do you have the minimum recommended 16 GB of RAM?
  • Are you running your boot pool on a thumb drive? Those are absolutely no longer recommended; a small SSD is now best practice.

I just updated to 13.0-U1. Now my server won't boot and I can't even get into the BIOS. Black screen. It will power on but the monitor never comes on. DEAD!!!

Are you running on a thumb drive? You'll need to clean install 13.0-U2 to a new boot drive, and then reimport your config.

Sounds like you had some bad luck and your server died when it rebooted. Happens. C2000 Atom by any chance?

Nothing shows up on the monitor. So I can't choose to boot from thumb drive.

You've obviously suffered a hardware failure of some sort. Do you get beep codes? What's your hardware setup?

Update starts downloading, and then I get the error "Error: base-os"

Never seen than one before. This is upgrading from 12.0-U8.1 -> 13.0-U2

This is on a VM that I use for testing, not a physical box.

@MikeyG, that's usually due to the CDN not being fully populated yet, and providing partial downloads. Try the manual upgrade.

Interesting. I tried a few times and it seemed to get further in the download each time until it finally just went through. Guess I just needed to be patient and wait for it to be populated.
