Would you be open to suggestions or is your heart set on buying brand new hardware.

Yeah and what you are trying to achieve here? Looks like you are not trying to expand storage, so a faster system? quieter? less heat? less power? Or just your old box failing?

So, I did a little research and this is what I found following your links:

SilverStone Case Storage Series SST-CS380 Black Plastic front door, steel body ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Standard PS2(ATX) Power Supply
$139.99

SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSH-LN4F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236
$209.99

SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSM-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236
$229.99

Intel Xeon E3-1220 V5 SkyLake 3.0 GHz LGA 1151 80W BX80662E31220V5 Server Processor
$206.99

Kingston 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Server Memory Model KVR21R15D4/16
$180.45

Seasonic FOCUS series SSR-750FM 750W 80 + Gold Power Supply, Semi-Modular, ATX12V/EPS12V, Compact 140 mm Size, 7 yr warranty
$88.22

That is $ 845.64 in parts if you go with the X11SSM-F, which is in stock now.
Alternatively, $ 825.64 in parts if you go with the X11SSH-F, which is less desirable.

However...

If you step back a couple versions on the system board, it will still do all the things that are usually needed and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The amount of performance gain between the latest generation (for what FreeNAS needs) and the equipment of three generations ago is negligible.

Here is an example build that I might suggest you can use these as a guide:

I have taken a careful look at that Silverstone case and i don't like the way it is built. I think this would be better and still plenty easy to change the drives.
CASE: Fractal-Design-Define-R5-FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK-Black-Silent-ATX-Midtower-Computer-Case - US $104.99
https://www.ebay.com/itm/253026336681

POWER: NIB Corsair CS-M Series CS550M 550W 80 Plus Modular Power Supply - US $69.00
https://www.ebay.com/itm/163279426704

System Board: Super Micro X9SCM-F Motherboard w/ Heatsink/Fan & I/O Shield - US 79.99
https://www.ebay.com/itm/192561781616

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230V2 3.30GHz Quad-Core CPU Processor SR0P4 LGA1155 - C737 - US $85.00
https://www.ebay.com/itm/283158542659

Memory: Samsung 8GB M391B1G73QH0-YK0 DDR3 1600MHz 240p UDIMM PC3-12800E ECC 2Rx8 - - US $62.88 * 2 = $125.76
https://www.ebay.com/itm/282764333255

Drive Controller: LSI-SAS-9211-8i-8-port-6Gb-s-PCI-E-Internal-HBA-Both-Brackets-IT-MODE - US $59.99
https://www.ebay.com/itm/152937435505

Drive Cables: Mini SAS to 4-SATA SFF-8087 Multi-Lane Forward Breakout Internal Cable - - US $12.99
https://www.ebay.com/itm/371681252206

Thermal Compound: Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Paste Grease Conductive Compound for CPU/GPU - US $6.95
https://www.ebay.com/itm/302624513215

I may have missed some accessories, and I didn't include drives, but this should get you all the key components.

Total: 544.67 --- that is about $300 less than what you were planning to spend and you might be able to save a few dollars more if you don't need a SAS controller, but you didn't say how many drives. I guessed it was eight because of the case you chose. Put the difference in savings and plan to build a new system in five years instead of ten.

An interesting point, the difference in passmark scores (below), your planned processor is actually slower than the one I would choose, not just in clock speed but also tested performance, but look at the difference in price:

Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5 @ 3.00GHz has a n average CPU Mark of 7745
https://www.ebay.com/itm/291902678193
cost: US $206.99

Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz has a n average CPU Mark of 8856
https://www.ebay.com/itm/273496245592
cost: US $79.99

You can get more performance, as an example:

Intel Xeon E3-1280 V2 @ 3.60GHz has a n average CPU Mark of 9468
https://www.ebay.com/itm/173544013880
cost: US $179.00

But you pay for those additional numbers. I imagine that the $80 processor will be enough because I see my processor sitting idle most of the time.

Awesome thanks for the suggestions. When it comes to hardware for anything I am out of my element.

"Yeah and what you are trying to achieve here? Looks like you are not trying to expand storage, so a faster system? quieter? less heat? less power? Or just your old box failing?"
Actually a bunch of those.
Storage is fine for now just really trying to get a faster system to replace a failing one. One additional item is the ease of replacing drives. I travel for work and need to rely on my wife to replace any drives that fail. The last failure I had I was out of town and she couldn't do it so we had to wait until I returned. As soon as I got back I replaced one and while it was resilvering a second one went... go figure. So accounting for hot swapping them I think is a must for that reason even though the chances of that happening again are slim.

I plan to also just buy 2 more additional 2TB WD Reds to max it out at 8 and redo all zpools and start fresh.

It will be running the usual Plex, Couch Potato, etc but I also want to decommission a Windows server I have and virtualize it on here if possible. The server is only a domain controller and runs my home automation stuff and a few others. Not very resource intense machine.

You might want to check your RAM compatibility.
  • Up to 64GB Unbuffered ECC UDIMM DDR4 2400 MHz
Not sure registered RAM will work.

You want something like this:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820242273

Good catch,

I think I am more or less going to go with something like what Chris posted. I totally forgot and didnt think about buying used. The only exceptions I am going to make would be the PSU, RAM (maxing the MOBO at 32GB), and case. Need to have drives that my wife can change out if I have a failure while traveling for work....

Yes, I completely missed that compatibility problem. I was too busy looking up alternatives.
Not sure registered RAM will work.
Thanks for catching that.

If how swapping is a requirement, have you look at server chassis?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro...m=372455885238&_trksid=p2045573.c100506.m3226

this can give you 12 bays, dual PSU, SAS backplane all at 150. You may want to swap out the stock fan though. And I would also start with 32G RAM if you want to play with virtualization.

I currently have a rack mount 4U but no HS drives. Trying to consolidate and decom the rack cabinet. The cabinet is filled with Cisco gear I used to study for my CCIE exam. I no longer need the equipment so I would rather just get rid of everything and downsize to gain some of my office space back.

***If anyone needs some Cisco routers, switches, a 1U Dell Server, KVM, Phones...I know someone ***

Did you end up going with that Silverstone case? How did it work out for you?
