I've been working on compiling parts for my build for a long time (kids are expensive). Now that I'm getting ready to buy the important bits, I'd like to revisit my build to see if it still makes sense. So far, I've bought a case, power supply and several disks. That being said, I'm not in love with the case (its too deep). If someone can recommend a smaller case, it would be much appreciated.

Here is what I have so far. Please let me know your thoughts.

Boot Drive
TBD - probably just some small SSD

Case

SeaSonic PSU .. check!
WD RED drives .. check!
SuperMicro X11 .. check!
ECC RAM .. check!

You're good to go. As for the boot drive, a couple of SanDisk Ultra Fit USB drives will do.

Thanks for reviewing! Any recommendation on a smaller case? I saw the pre-builds on the FreeNAS site and love the idea of something that isnt 21 inches deep.

I have a solution, sit the wife down at the dinner while the kids are eating and politely inform her you have decided not to have kids any more. Hopefully the kids don't take it too hard.

There are not a lot of short cases that take at least 6 drives. I can only think of Fractal Design Node 804. There may be used Lian Li stuff that suits your needs, but I don't really know.
There is also an 8-bay Silverstone chassis, but the Fractal boxes are by far better in my eyes.

The Fractal R4 that you have in your list is not bad, but the R5 is much more clever (cleverer?) designed, if you just look at the dust-filters. You can remove them very easily from the front.

Recently Fractal Design has published the R6. But I don't know if you already get this one at your place.
