Building my first NAS

Hello everyone! I'm new to FreeNAS and need opinions and advice on my parts list!
looking forward to learning all about FreeNas community.

I will be using my sever for files, photos, plex, storage!

SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSM-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236

SanDisk SSD PLUS 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SDSSDA-120G-G26 (boot drive)

It looks like maybe that memory is non-ECC. You really want ECC if possible. Also how are you going to set up your drives? With only 3 drives were you thinking RaidZ1? RaidZ1 is a very bad idea with large drives. You can save some money on the SSD boot drive and find a smaller one if you want. 120G boot drive is massive. I really like that motherboard, it should work well. I can't really comment on the processor as I don't run Plex or anything on mine.

You are right, the memory is none-EEC, I’ll check Newegg again.

Should I buy smaller drives, say six 4TB?

Stick with the 120G SSD for a boot drive. Smaller SSDs are pointless unless they are really cheap. Even then...

The extra space on a larger SSD gives it more life and more space for boot environments.

That would be my suggestion. At least 4 drives but 6 would be better. You could do 6 drives in a RaidZ2.

I found this memory on new egg! should I get 1 stick 16gb or 2 8gb sticks. Both ECC.

You'll see slightly better performance from two sticks versus one, as the MB can use memory interleaving. IMO, if you're planning to run multiple jails or VMs, I would step up to 32GB... you need 8 for FN itself, more for your jails, and then the ARC. 16 doesn't leave you much breathing room. But, then again, I believe in overbuilding things.

That memory looks like ECC Registered memory. I think you need ECC Unbuffered UDIMM memory. Take a look here for examples: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Supermicro/x11ssm-f

Personally I would go for one 16GB when your talking a NAS. That would allow for a better upgrade path. If we were talking a gaming PC then I would suggest getting memory in pairs. But then again I am pretty new to Freenas also so maybe someone else can speak up.

I am having a hard time finding Crucial memory, everyone is out of stock. Is there another brand that is equal to Crucial?
I am finding out new things by the minute about NAS!! I was going to go with stock stuff until I found you guys! Thanks again!!
Also, do you prefer 54000 rpm or 7200 rpm hard drives?

The three aftermarket memory manufacturers I use are Crucial, Kingston, and Corsair. Kingston list these for your motherboard:
KVR21E15S8/4HA
KVR24E17S8/4MB
KVR21E15D8/8HA
KVR24E17D8/16MA
KVR24E17S8/8MA

As far as hard drives I prefer 5400 speed for home use. They usually have enough performance for home and produce less heat than the 7200rpm drives.
