Hi folks
I am using FreeNAS since Version 9.1 especially for Time Machine backups from my MacBookPro.
I have a special AFP share call TimeMachine on my FreeNAS box, a user with readwrite access to this share and never had a problem using time machine. But since the upgrade to 9.3 sometime I get strange errors "could not access sparse bundle" etc. but it worked. But after a few days all my backups got erased after verification and then I never managed creating a backup again, the share on the FreeNAS box is empty but I get errors like "could not create sparsebundle Error(null)". I rebooted both machines, restarted the afp service no chance. I have another afp share for storing media data which has no problem at all.
Any hints or ideas ?

Regards
Michael

I'm sorry no, my TimeMachine directory is just empty, no sparsebundle files anymore, but I will try creating a new one.

Maybe this is a simple permission problem

On the OSX side

≥ ls -al /Volumes/TimeMachine 9:51
total 13
drwx------@ 1 fillg1 staff 264 15 Dez 09:49 .
drwxrwxrwt@ 7 root admin 238 15 Dez 08:30 ..
-rwxrwxr-x@ 1 fillg1 staff 6148 14 Dez 20:08 .DS_Store

fillg1 in /Volumes
≥ echo >/Volumes/TimeMachine/testfile 9:51

fillg1 in /Volumes
≥ mkdir /Volumes/TimeMachine/testdir 9:52
mkdir: /Volumes/TimeMachine/testdir: Permission denied

On the FreeNAS side
fillg1@Ariolc:~ % ls -al /mnt/Data/TimeMachine/
total 15
drwxrwxr-x+ 3 fillg1 wheel 5 Dec 15 09:52 ./
drwxrwxr-x+ 6 fillg1 wheel 7 Nov 20 09:38 ../
drwxrwxr-x+ 2 root wheel 2 Dec 14 21:41 .AppleDB/
-rwxrwxr-x+ 1 fillg1 wheel 6148 Dec 14 20:08 .DS_Store*
-rwxrwxr-x+ 1 fillg1 wheel 1 Dec 15 09:52 testfile*
fillg1@Ariolc:~ %

What am I doing wrong ?

Problem solved !
After checking all setting again and again, I noticed that the TimeMachine zfs dataset had the wrong share type, after switching the setting from Unix to Mac everything is working fine again. OK, I lost all my backups since September, but this is not a great problem since all important working data ist stored on another zfs dataset.
Just for curiosity, what is the difference between these share types ?

I have a similar problem. I can't get time machine to work. When I click to connect and enter in my name I then get a window with "You do not have the necessary read, write, and append privileges on the selected network backup disk".

AltecBX, did you ever resolve that problem? Sure sounds like a permissions issue. Was Time Machine working before?
