Hi,

I'm a new user to FreeNAS and our company is making use of FreeNAS for backup storage at our datacentre but I'm struggling to get my head around a few things and was wondering if someone could help?

We have a virtual Veeam server running within our VMware environment which has a drive presented over iSCSI (19TB) for backup storage from the primary FreeNAS box (10G networking with Cisco Nexus switches, jumbo frames etc.)

The Veeam server has 6 CPU cores with 16GB RAM.

The FreeNAS boxes are repurposed older Cisco servers each with a single Xeon E5-2420 v2 CPU's at 2.20Ghz, 16GB RAM and 12 x 4TB SATA drives on an LSI HBA in IT Mode - all good on that front I think. We have 2 FreeNAS boxes.

I have successfully set up a ZFS storage pool on both FreeNAS boxes with Raid Z2 using all drives on each. I have created a zvol on the primary FreeNAS box and a zvol of the same size on the secondary and have set up a replication task and periodic snapshot task to replicate from the primary FreeNAS to the secondary in a different location (10G networking between the 2) - seems to be working ok.

I realise overhead storage space is needed for the creation of snapshots however where I am a little confused is the used and free space.

My understanding is 12 x 4TB drives equates to roughly 32TB RAW space on which I have created a zvol of 19TB leaving me with 13TB of space for snapshots to take place. However this isn't what I'm seeing.

Can anyone explain this behaviour or what I'm doing wrong? I've attached some screenshots for reference.

Many thanks in advance.
