Hey All,

First time poster, long time lurker.

Have a server I have been getting ready to use for storing backups. Saw there was an update notification this morning and updated through the autoupdate without thinking twice.

On boot smartd was alerting and checked the logs it failed to start.

I was able to click it off in the WebGUI, but not turn it back on, prompting Server Failed to Start. Starting it on the CLI shows:

service smartd start
Will not 'start' smartd because smartd_enable is NO.

In /val/log/messages it shows:
nas notifier: Starting smartd.
nas smartd[13530]: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed but has no entries (like /dev/hda)
nas root: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/smartd: WARNING: failed to start smartd
nas notifier: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/smartd: WARNING: failed to start smartd

Server specs are:
Build FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201506292130
Platform Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 0 @ 2.20GHz
Memory 32697MB

Let me know what else I am missing or if I need to post a log. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a bug if you can't re-enable it via the GUI. You should be able to put it into the rc.conf so it looks like this:
Code:
smartd_enable="YES"

And then run "service smartd start" (minus the quotes) and see if that works as a temporary fix.

@Ericloewe yes, that looks like the same issue. Did he report it as a bug? Would like me to do the same?

@DJ9 No luck... :(
smartd_enable="YES"
/etc/rc.conf: 74 lines, 1694 characters.
[root@nas] ~# service smartd start
Will not 'start' smartd because smartd_enable is NO.

That's because there isn't a solution. After much talk on the forums here and IRC.

Its just that the proprietary controller will never push SMART data to FreeNAS.

I ended up getting a LSI SAS9211 and reflashing it. I haven't had an issue since.

Sorry this isn't the answer you were looking for. But to be perfectly honest. If I had read the supported hardware first I would of never had any issues.

I am sorry. I did not make it clearer, I am not using a controller (yet). It is still having trouble. I am using a Asrock Z77 EXTREME3 motherboard. Could that be an issue?

I note the manual for that board claims: "ASRock Interactive UEFI is a blend of system configuration tools, cool sound effects and stunning visuals. Not only will it make BIOS setup less difficult but also a lot more amusing." But it does have software raid settings, are you sure they have all been disabled in the BIOS, amusing or otherwise?

It does, but it wasn't enabled. Raid not enabled.

Well your problem is well beyond my understanding, but it does seem to be a SATA driver problem of some sort, and somewhat different from the bug mentioned above, especially as this is apparently an Intel SATA controller on the board. (Is that right?)

I would suggest starting a new thread, and putting the details of your hardware (particularly all the disks the number of which is not clear to me at least). You will hopefully get the attention of the experts!
