Built my new NAS, got all excited, set it up and now its slow af

I get slow transfer speeds both too the server and from the server to my client.

Client is a full Gigabit enabled Win10 Client

Server is a full Gigabit enabled FreeNAS server - NIC is Intel Gigabit (intel i218-lm)
CPU - Pentium G4400
Memory - 2x8GB Crucial ECC
Mobo -Gigabyte Intel X150M PRO
Storage - 6 x 2TB RAIDZ2
FreeNAS 9.10.2

Transfer speeds sit at about 11.4MB/s
Tested by transferring about 150GB of Movies (So multiple 2-4GB files)

Ive tried new network cables and tried it via my switch and directly via router, nothing new, tried a few bits ive found on the forum to no luck.

Single share to access all of the datasets, so no conflicting shares i guess?

if you hadnt guessed already I am 100% new to all of this.

Let me know what you need to help

Thanks

Sounds like something is still negotiating at FastEthernet (100Mbps) speeds.

Yep, i was thinking the exact same thing, but the indicators on the ethernet port say otherwise. soooo i am lost for what to do.

Is there a thing to change within FreeNAS to fix that?

Make sure you're using minimum Cat5e (under 100m length) for gigabit speeds. If you're using Cat5 cable, then the most you're going to see is 100Mbps.

Yep definately using CAT5E and its about 3M long, the current cable that is

Checked again, made sure all the cables were working at Gigabit standards etc. All CAT5E, i checked the ethernet port lights etc, made 100% sure they indicate Gigabit connection, they do. And that is the same for both the client and the server they are both full Gigabit, I now honestly have no idea what the issue now is

Managed to do an iPerf test and here is what i got

[root@freenas ~]# iperf -s
------------------------------------------------------------
Server listening on TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 64.0 KByte (default)
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 7] local 192.168.2.4 port 5001 connected with 192.168.2.3 port 49299
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 7] 0.0-10.0 sec 113 MBytes 94.9 Mbits/sec
[ 8] local 192.168.2.4 port 5001 connected with 192.168.2.3 port 49309
[ 8] 0.0-10.0 sec 113 MBytes 94.9 Mbits/sec
[ 7] local 192.168.2.4 port 5001 connected with 192.168.2.3 port 49330
[ 7] 0.0-10.0 sec 113 MBytes 94.9 Mbits/sec

Essentially monkey your hunch was right its running at 100Mbps But i have no idea why

Right I can now honestly say I am a bit of an idiot.

So I have always been doing all my tests going from:

PC --a--> Switch --b--> Router --c--> FreeNAS

because the PC I have been testing from is my main workstation and I was under the impression that is was running gigabit. All the times in the past that I've ever needed gigabit it's always been:

PC1 --a--> Switch --b--> PC 2

So it's always been gigabit.

So the test I did this morning I hooked my laptop straight into the router so it skipped the cable between the switch and router (b). The results I got were these imgur.com/gallery/3petr .

Essentially during all my cable tests I failed to test the link between the switch and the router. I didnt have a chance to change the cable this morning I had to leave for college.

If it turns out to be the cable then I can safely claim the world's biggest amateur title.

I'll update when I know what it is when I get home.

Riiight so yes i may now claim the world biggest Amateur prize, i failed to check one single cable because i thought it was fine.

Are there any ways of optimizing the speeds between the client and server. At the moment im getting 100-110MB/s. Any fine tuning that can be done?
