Hello all,

I am using one of the (in)famous Backblaze Storage Pod builds with FreeNAS 8.3. Prior to the upgrade from 8.2.x everything was humming along nicely for almost two years. I started with a .7x release and have been steadily upgrading the software - after testing - without problems... Until now.

I built a test system using one of my backplanes and one of my Silicon Image-based Syba cards and loaded 5 disks. 8.3 behaved fine for a month, then I deployed it on my main system a few weeks ago. Since then, my system slowly tore itself apart. It began with entire backplanes timing out (dropping off the system) and reappearing at random. The problems grew worse and persisted through yesterday when they started to cause some kind of kernel panic. Now the system won't even boot. The timeouts swamp the boot cycle and ultimately cause a panic.

So I have several questions, which stem from my understanding of FreeNAS documentation and from reading numerous related threads on here and on FreeBSD's forums:

From the 8.3.0-RELEASE-p1 notes:
FreeNAS 8.3.0-BETA1 has the FreeBSD base system switched to FreeBSD
8.3-RELEASE-p3. The most noticable affect of this change is the
inclusion of ZFS version 28, but there are a number of other driver
changes as well.
What drivers changed? I have read that the siis(4) driver was updated and that the newer version has given people problems. If this driver was changed, is it possible for me to roll back to the older one? Also, what about an ahci [sic] driver? What's the difference? How to I tell the system to use one instead of the other?

From the few logs I was able to retrieve before conducting a hard shutdown, it looks like my system was trying to load a HighPoint RocketRaid driver, which may or may not be normal, though that driver would not suit my SATA adapters.

From the same release notes:
The GUI now supports active-passive multipath capable hardware, which
targets mainly SAS drives on dual expander backplanes. Any multipath
capable devices that are detected will be placed in multipath units
which are then exposed to the GUI, and the parent devices will be
hidden.
What does this mean? Does the system handle multipath hardware differently? Would this new handling explain why my backplanes are dropping out?

I am going to try to boot the system with all SATA cards physically disconnected. The system may freak out because it cannot detect its zpool, though I am not certain if this will be the case. I tried to detach the zpool before the hard shutdown, but the kernel panic hit shortly after I told the GUI to detach the pool.

I do not want to risk any more damage to my disk array. By the time I cut the system off the disks were making strange sounds, like they were constantly being initialized. The one time I was able to run:

It showed all kinds of read, write, and chksum errors spread across most of my disks. The numbers were single digits on an individual disk basis, but still scary to see.

Any insight would be helpful. I realize it is possible that this is a hardware problem though I believe that to be a highly unlikely scenario. What are the chances that all of my SATA adapters died simultaneously? That said, it could be a catastrophic motherboard failure. I will have to configure another mobo to figure out if this is true, but I'd rather exhaust my software options before dismantling the hardware.

For those who are not familiar with the Backblaze Pods:
I am using these controller cards: Syba PEX40008
They are paired to custom 5-port backplanes which run a compatible Silicon Image controller for port multiplication.

Things from all that I just read in no particular order:

1. You could go back to the older drivers(assuming they were the problem) if you recompiled FreeNAS yourself forcing the old drivers.
2. The release notes about multipath I/O applies to SAS only. AFAIK SATA does not support multipath in any form. Remember SAS uses "port expanders" and SATA uses "port multipliers". They do the same thing on the surface, but how they do it is much different internally.
3. I'm not a master of reading those logs, but it does look like a siis problem(or at least whever is wrong is causing problems with the siis controller).
4. Based on those logs, you have at least 2 drives that are not healthy.
-ADA10 was "lost" at one point.. not a good sign for that hard drive. It is almost certainly pre-failure and should be replaced. Being that it w
-ADA8 has 73(HOLY SMOKES!) currently unreadable (pending) sectors. Typically if you have more than 0 at any given time that's a MAJOR indicator of a drive that is failing. That drive is basically trashed since you have so many. That value is the number of sectors the drive is sure is bad. If sectors are failing that fast, that drive needs replaced.. pronto.
-ADA9 has 3 currently unreadable (pending) sectors. Just as with ADA9, anything above zero is typically not a good sign at all. This drive should be monitored at the absolute least and replaced if possible.
-Look at the following logs:(I removed some other siis timeouts in between these entries)

Not sure of the exact situation, but the fact that ADA0, 1, 5, 6 and 8 all were "lost" at various times is an indicator of something gone wrong. The fact that they were at different times is usually an indicator of an issue with that exact device. Of course the last 4 entries are likely from pmp0 being lost and not a drive related issue. Notice that pmp0 was offline for a full minute before being removed, and then readded almost 2 minutes later. There's something wrong with pmp0. It could be that pmp0 going offline was the symptom or the cause, it could be a drive locking up pmp0, I don't know. That's something you will have to identify for yourself unfortunately.
I'm not too sure what the last 2 lines mean for ADA0. That's obviously not a "good" thing, it could be related to the timeouts, the losing of devices randomly, or something else. I'm not sure.

5. I understand your skepticism with it not being a hardware issue, but a hardware issue can cause problems that appear to be completely unrelated to the issue you are having too. For instance, a bad stick of RAM can cause zpool data corruption that would give you no indication as to the cause without doing troubleshooting and diagnosis. I wouldn't dismiss a hardware issue until you've tested all the hardware to the maximum extend possible. As it is, there's at least 3 drives I'd order replacements for right now(ADA8,9 and 10). ADA8 and ADA9 because of the pending sectors, and ADA10 because it was lost by itself with no other disks getting lost in a relatively close timeframe.
5. I've never used a port multiplier, but from what I've read of others using them they aren't the most robust in the world. Some people have said that when 1 disk starts having issues it can cause the port multiplier to lock up. Other had problems with drivers actually working with port multipliers. Of course, since the system has been running fine for a while its not likely to be your problem.

So here's what I would do if I were in your shoes. I'll write the rest assuming you are familiar with using Windows since that's what most people use. Obviously, you can do your own homework and go any other way you want with these steps once you understand my logic. This is a multi-step multi-pronged approach. I'm going to assume you have no backups, so these tests should be safe to do assuming your data is even recoverable right now.

There's 2 ways to start this:

1. Go back to the old version of FreeNAS or
2. Stop using your server right now.

Personally, if you have no backups, I'd go straight to #2(stop using your server right now). If you choose to use the old version of FreeNAS that did work and it works fine I'd do a long SMART test of every single disk you do and replace any that have problems. I can pretty much assure you that ADA8 and ADA9 need to be replaced. ADA8 may have been failing for quite some time. After the long SMART test is complete a scrub will need to be performed to verify consistency. You can do this after you replace the failed disks, but if you have more failed disks than redundancy drives you should replace the "most failed" disks and accept the fact that there is likely data loss.

1. You didn't say how it is all configured, but losing and gaining your devices means your zpool is almost certainly inconsistent. Depending on how religiously you do scrubs you may have a lot of lost data or very little/none. If you don't have backups I'd be a little worried right now. Of course, you probably are already panicing so take a breather. It is VERY important that you keep a clear head from this point on and keep good logs of everything you do.
2. Pull all of the hard drives out(this is because the next step will keep your server busy for a while). I'd make sure to label them all so you know which one was where in the system.
3. I'd make a memtest x86+ USB key or CD and run at least 3 passes on the FreeNAS server. This could take anywhere from 2 hours to 12+ hours to complete. You can do the next step at the same time as this step.
4. I use HDD Sentinel 4 Pro personally, but I would do a long SMART test on every single drive in another machine that doesn't use a port multiplier. Personally I'd recommend you use SATA ports on an Intel SATA controller. This will be VERY time consuming as each disk can take anywhere from 1-4 hours to run. Use a system that hasn't had any problems recently. You can test multiple disks simultaneously, but if one of them causes the machine to freeze you may be forced to do 1 at a time. Any errors found or other problems should be saved as a screenshot or text log(whichever you can do) so you know the results of every disk. HDD Sentinel is only $23 USD and I like it because it'll give you a popup in Windows of failing disks when errors start occurring during normal operation. If a disk starts having so many errors that its going to take crazy long periods of time(days or weeks) don't even bother to finish the test. Just record what info you do have and that you cancelled the test. I'd save a copy of the SMART info for each drive before and after you test them. This can be done in HDD Sentinel by going to the "Report" meny and saving a "report". If you do an "Authentic Report" you can save multiple disks simultaneously. Any disk that has so many errors you don't want to wait for it to finish is a disk that will need to be replaced. I'm somewhat expecting at least 2 drives to fail the long tests, and perhaps a few more. Do this for every single disk in the FreeNAS server. Yes, I realize that this is going to really really suck because of the number of drives that the backblaze can hold, but since you already have 2 bad disks and we're not sure about the rest we need to know the exact condition of all of your disks. Do NOT let Windows format your disks. It doesn't recognize ZFS partitions and will "offer" to do you a "favor" and format it for you. If you do this don't expect that disk to work in the zpool without needing to be reformatted again.
5. After all of the disks are tested and RAM is test, replace any bad parts. Statistically I don't expect your RAM to be bad, but bad RAM is a complete pain to deal with because there is no error message in operating system for bad RAM except via a RAM test. If you have more "failed" hard drives than you have redundancy for then you have to make a choice. Look at all those logs and figure out which drives are the "least" broken and keep those. Once you get FreeNAS working again you'll need to do some disk replacements. As an alternative, you can keep them all and try to do a scrub, but this may not end well for you as the scrub may never complete.
6. Bootup FreeNAS with the old/new hard drives you've picked out and do scrubs and disk replacement as you see fit based on the testing done. Keep in mind that if installed disks are so broken that the scrubs can't complete within a few days you may be forced to do a backup to someplace else and destroy/recreate the zpool with working drives. If you have a spare USB stick and a backup of your config that would be the ideal way to go. If some of the problems are related to your USB stick going bad then at least you have a fresh install. Which version you choose to use is up to you. Personally, I'd use 8.3.0 because of the new zpool version. If you've upgraded your zpool from the command line(you MUST do this manually.. there is no upgrade from the GUI) then you have no choice but to use 8.3.0+.

Of course, if you have a good religious backup of your data, I'd do the RAM test, test all of the drives, replace any that are questionable/failed and restore from backup. However, I'm somewhat expecting you to say you don't have backups.. which is not a good idea, but alot of people do it anyway.

Once all of this is done and your server is back up and running fine you need to setup the FreeNAS email and SMART monitoring. You should have gotten an email with ever single one of those current unrecoverable pending sector errors, and I'd think after you got 50+ of them you'd be wondering why your server is emailing you all the time. Since one drive is at 70+ I am thinking your email isn't setup, SMART monitoring isn't setup, or both.

If you don't have regular scrubbing setup you should. I'm not sure if you had regular scrubbing setup or not. A scrub, in an ideal situation, would likely fix(or at least significantly lower) your current pending sector count. But as high as it is I think its more likely you aren't doing scrubs or at least not frequently enough. I do them twice a month(1st and 15th) and have them automated.

I seriously considered making a backblaze pod when I first read about it, then abandoned the idea as soon as I realized it uses port multipliers. There seems to be so many issues with compatibility, reliability, and drivers that I wasn't about to spend that kind of money on a system that may not work how I wanted. If you do manage to get FreeNAS back up after.

Somewhere in the forums is a thread that explains how to make a script to email you SMART info on all drives every day. I highly recommend you setup a nightly email so you have a history of data for your drives in the future as well as being able to identify failing disks. In that thread I included a modification to the script that emails me a list of the "Current Uncorrectable (Pending) Sectors" values before all of the SMART info for every disk because the CUPS value seems to be one of the first indicators of a disk going bad. I never read the long SMART info but just look at the CUPS value. If its zero then I just file the email away.

Sorry this is so long, it took me over 2 hours to write. Hopefully its no filled with typos/grammar errors and is helpful. Post back and let us know how its going!

1. I do not know how to "force" any other version of a driver, but that may be a good option. I would appreciate some insight as to how to accomplish this.

2. Thank you for clarifying the multipath I/O. I didn't believe it was the same thing as port multiplication but I needed to ask.

3. Agreed that there is definitely an siis problem, though I'm not sure if it's hardware or software.

4. I am aware of the two drives with sector problems, but those problems only occurred in the last two or three days. They may be symptoms of a failing controller. I agree that the drives need to be replaced. I keep a cold spare, but just deployed it a little over a week ago. I RMA'd the WD disk it replaced, and that drive replacement is due in on Monday or Tuesday of this upcoming week. I will deploy that new disk and RMA the bad ones (they are under warranty) ASAP.

5. You're absolutely right about taking the necessary steps to rule out hardware issues. I have an older disk I can deploy with a Windows installation to run tests against the motherboard and RAM.

6. Port multipliers. I'm not sure what else to say, other than they have worked like a champ until now. If they all kicked the bucket at the same time, then meh on them. I will smash them with a hammer. And then promptly replace them. Maybe.

Regarding the process by which I will dig into this problem:

I cannot go back to an older version of FreeNAS, as ZFS zpool version 28 was not introduced until 8.3 I was interested in some of the options available with v28, so I upgraded my zpool. So 8.3+ it is.

I have already turned off the server. After several failed reboots last night, I just turned it off and started digging through my logs before deciding I should post something on here. Regarding backups, I do have backups of my critical data... Documents, pictures, music, home videos, and system backups are all stored elsewhere. I do not however, have HDD backups of my optical media - the optical media itself is the backup. So worst case scenario I have to rip a bunch of stuff again. Time consuming, yes, but not the end of the world.

I was able to sneak in long SMART tests on ada8 and ada9 approximately two days ago - these tests did not return any errors. I also scrub this pool every other week, and had run manual scrubs twice in the last week when the timeout errors began coming in heavier. At this moment I am not terribly concerned about data loss. I may have a handful of damaged files, but it shouldn't be anything I can't overcome with a fresh scrub once I'm able to get the array online.

1. I am following your advice and already trying to keep a cool head. I shut off my efforts last night and decided I just needed to sleep on it. I woke up this morning, really tore into the logs, and then started crafting my original post for this thread. I've since been diagraming my layout with pen and paper to double-verify that I understand how the system is wired - which backplane is plugged into which port on which SATA card... And which HDD reports through each backplane, and in what sequence.

2. I will likely pull the disks as you suggest. I've already put masking tape on them to identify their physical slot in the system. I have a list correlating disk serial numbers to their logical position, so I can correlate the two once I'm able to bring the system back online.

3. I don't know what memtest is, but I am going to look it up when I'm finished with this post.

4. I do have a Windows box I can run all of my drives through. I will probably take the time to run long SMART tests against the "known offender" disks, but I probably won't mess with the other ones, because I believe there is a bigger offender somewhere in the line. Most of the disks are probably OK.

5. I will wait on the scrub until I am confident all of the other hardware is sound. Then I'll be scrubbing like a mad man.

6. I thought about the USB stick going bad. I don't see anything in the logs that indicate that problem, but I can scrounge up another 4GB stick. No biggie, as I do have a semi-current backup of my config. I backed it up after I upgraded to 8.3.

I am not disappointed with the choice, though I may have to upgrade to more robust SATA cards (LSI) and redo my wiring harness to "straight plug" each disk if the current setup continues to give me trouble.

The current uncorrectable pending sectors means the drive can't read data and ECC and get the two to agree. Basically, that data is corrupted. Since you have redundancy you shouldn't have any corrupt data. However, since the machine keeps freezing the parity data may not have been committed to the disk, so there's no way to know how "good" or "bad" things are until you are able to successfully complete a scrub. I don't think there's any way for the port multipliers to be responsible for the actual CUPS error rate. Occasionally one bad sector will manifest itself, but when you start seeing the CUPS go up at any regular rate that's a sign of a drive going down the drain and to replace it ASAP. Typically I see the CUPS error rate go from zero to really high in very short order.

I doubt they are all bad. One could be bad. From what I've read port multipliers cause alot of their havok because aside from multiplying ports it also multiplies any problems.

Honestly, I never trust the SMART test "results". Especially lately, instead of actually telling you if anything is wrong its turned into a barrier the hard drive manufacturers use to say no RMA is necessary. It's not uncommon for a hard drive to have tons of bad sectors, but since there are still free reserve sectors the drive won't say there is a problem. You have to read the actual SMART parameters and figure it out for yourself. It's pretty crappy, but quite a few people in other forums have hard drives they'll never trust with data again, but can't RMA because the SMART test won't "FAIL".

Excellent. The fact of the matter is if you lost any data, its already gone. The real challenge is to figure out how to pick up as many pieces as possible and get the jigsaw puzzle back togther. It is good that you have backups. Those can save your butt in a pinch.

You must burn an ISO or make a USB stick, boot from it and let it run. 3 passes without an error typically means your RAM is good.

The problem is there is no distinct error for a bad USB. Typically "really crappy random errors that don't make sense" is an indicator of a bad USB stick or bad RAM. Unfortunately the best way to see if its a bad USB stick is to just make a new one and see if the problems persist.

If everything has been running fine from your perspective and you are seeing repairs, that's almost a guarantee something is actually wrong. For me, seeing any "repairs" above zero to me is a red flag to look closer and see if a problem is developing.

I don't think backblaze was a bad option. When I was considering it I was very concerned as to how I would identify potential issues via SMART when using FreeNAS and how the heck I'd even begin to troubleshoot those issues. Obviously with my very long first post I'm much more comfortable that I could find and fix them. Now that I have a year+ of FreeNAS experience under my belt I would probably go the backblaze route if the opportunity presented itself.

Alright... Quick and dirty update:

I started the debug process tonight by pulling all of my drives, labeling them with scotch tape and referring to a hand-drawn chart as a physical location map. For giggles, I rebooted the system with everything else still attached. Port Multipliers and Syba SATA cards are still a go. The quick summary is that the system booted fine and with its "usual" quickness. The log is kind of lengthy, but here it is:

It ends with me logging in to FTP to dump my entire directory structure for any further analysis. It's been up for almost 20 minutes now with no other log activity, outside of my continued FTP connections.

So nothing too exciting yet, but the good news is the system didn't set itself on fire when I turned it back on. I am going to let it simmer tonight and see how she looks in the morning. I will prep a Windows boot disk tomorrow, if I can find a spare drive. I will use Windows to test various functions on the motherboard before I begin reloading disks. Then I can begin testing connections to the SATA cards.

Looks good so far. I'm kind of expecting issues to be with bad RAM, bad USB stick, or your bad hard disks as being the most probable cause.

Alrighty.

Memtest is running now. It's going to take a while, so I may not see results until I get up in the morning. I probably can't wait up for it to finish. Once that's complete then I am going to begin testing backplanes (port multipliers) and SATA adapter cards one at a time with an older spare disk I have... While that testing is going on I will be connecting my pool disks to a Windows box to run additional SMART tests. This probably won't begin until tomorrow evening.

I will report back sometime tomorrow with the Memtest results.

Since I'm essentially new to Memtest I'll let the screenshot speak up:

I do acknowledge that there is an error, though I am curious how serious it is. I completed 8 full passes and this error only came up once, on pass number 2. I am trying to read through Memtest's forums for a better understanding. How much memory (if any) is bad? Is there a way to isolate the bad stick without testing each one individually?

I have not conjured much new information testing my SATA disks in my Windows box. There are definitely two Seagate drives that I will RMA ASAP, though I am hoping they survive long enough for me to RMA them one at a time, so I can resilver my array once I bring it back online.

As for the backplane / SATA adapter cards, I will not be able to test them until tomorrow. I have a 1TB drive I am going to bounce around to see if there are any prominent errors stemming from simply connecting a disk and putting it under some I/O.

Having (now) read the FAQ on Memtest's forums, I will dissect the memory error tomorrow. It seems like I'll be testing each module individually to determine if there's something wrong with a specific module, or whether the problem is elsewhere in the memory subsystem. I did double check memory compatibility with my mobo. It checks out according to ASUS.

That said, I am not yet convinced that memory is the root of this problem. I let Memtest run for a good long while and it only coughed up one error.

Hopefully this isn't another rabbit hole I have to climb down. But if it is, the c'est la vie!

Even 1 error can cause data loss if your data is in that location. It can cause instability too if code is being stored there and is not correct. There have been people that had a bad stick that caused a complete loss of data on their zpool despite having a RAIDZ2.

It's like your computer has alzheimer's and you never know if what the computer thinks is accurate or not.

This is where things get messy. It could be the RAM, motherboard, or CPU. Remember those memory locations are read from RAM, the signal passed through the motherboard to the CPU. Any part of that path can be the problem. Additionally, if its a RAM slot problem you may find it even harder to find the problem if you start testing 1 stick at a time.

Because of the way MEMTEST works its extremely unlikely that the issue was from cosmic radiation. Somewhere there was a cool calculation that the probability of memtest having a failure doing the test being a result of cosmic radiation exceeded the total lifespan of the known universe(13.7billion years).

At the very least, you have some kind of hardware issue. At the worst it could be an indicator of the problems you were having, but may not be the cause.

Issues that show up on memtest are pretty much an indicator of a system that shouldn't be trusted to do anything until fixed.

I believe Linux allows you to block certain known bad memory locations. Not sure about FreeBSD though, and not sure if FreeNAS has that function. Considering that RAM is covered by a lifetime warranty there really isn't any good reason not to do an RMA :P

I do apologize for the delay in response regarding this matter. March Madness seeped into the brain :D

When it rains, it pours... My system will no longer POST. I was in the process of verifying each individual stick of RAM to determine which one was the culprit (I have six total and was loading number four of six to test) when the system decided it didn't want to boot anymore.

Heh. So much for bad RAM.

I will go ahead and test the remaining RAM modules in another system, though I will likely be looking at another mobo in my immediate future. The last possibility is that my wiring harness gimped out somewhere, so I will spend tomorrow evening working through that possibility - verifying that the wiring harness is wired and connected correctly.

I'll post my findings once I have more.
